How long does it take you...

I have a few friends who are very interested (well more like two, which one of them is actually scared of single engines for my rec. flying) and its fun to talk to them... like last week he was asking me how you land the plane, what do flaps do, is there alot of math involved, do you get scared while talking on the radio and stuff... other one was asking what the winglets are for (he thought they were vertical stabilizers) how does radio nav work and stuff.... I loved talking about it lol

They're all made up, you know . . . :rotfl:

Or greatly embellished for effect!:D

There's actually a thread in the "Military" section right now . . . some guy apparently doubts my authenticity . . . lmao.

I saw that. He's doubting everyones authenticity. If you haven't served with him, youre a fake and a hack!:)

If somebody asks me what I do, I'll mention it, but I'm rarely the one to bring it up.

Nothing wrong with bringing it up, if that's your thing. I just get tired of talking about aviation with people who don't really know much about it. Of course I'm always friendly and happy to talk flying if somebody's interested, but I wait for them to ask the questions.

Same here, if someone brings it up I'll definately talk about it but I am tired of hearing BS reasoning behind how an airplane functions and what the state of the industry is.

Centennial airport happens to have an excellent restaurant. The layout and food quality are good enough for buusiness lunches, and the view of one of the FBO ramps, runways and Front Range of the Rockies is great. I take clients there. This past week I called a client to invite him for lunch. When I asked what was available near his place of business, the reply was, Can we go to the airport again?"

I went there the first time over the holidays... Man that place was awesome! The one at Jeffco isnt bad either in the summertime as you can sit outside. Food is better at the Centennial one though. Very good food at APA.

My friends know nothing about aviation. They see a citation and ask me if thats what I fly. :) or this "Hey man, what are the chances Ill die tomorrow when I fly to Oakland, Im taking South West" my response is "About as good as you getting shot by a gun that shoots flaming lizards while your hailing a cab from OAK to your hotel."

I'll talk about it with some people, but with others (older, no offense) I wont as much. People my own age usually just say something like "cool" and ask one or two questions. It's the older people where I get things like "so do you fly jets and everything?"(right after getting PPL) or "So have you flown by yourself"(even now as a senior). By now I can almost tell if the person is likely to ask some dumb question or not.

I might also add if you are single it really does work on the chicks... just when they ask you what you fly, make sure you tell them that you fly a jet for an airline though :D lol

or you could always be a figther pilot lol

Where do I get that gun? It would make me the coolest gal in town!

I wear a sign that can be seen from 3 miles away. The women just line up and throw their panties at me.

sarcasm?

Another thought: my guy broke up with me when I told him I wanted to fly....he said it was too "man-ly". I guess that being a doc who takes direct responsibility for life every day is somehow different.

I flew to Centennial many times over the summer with friends just to go to the restaurant (and get more practice at a busy airport of course).

I like to tell people I'm a hotel room tester. I don't know where I heard that one but it is fun to use.

Most of my friends are pilots, controllers, or weather briefers, so yeah, we talk shop every day without even really noticing. I try not to bring it up with my non-aviation friends (unless they ask about something or I really screwed up and scared myself, and feel the need to "confess") because I'm afraid I'll drone on about it long past the point where they've stopped caring. As for bringing it up when meeting new people..... well..... I suppose the only new people I meet are at the airport!!

I have no life.

For every man who thinks what you do is too "manly", there are at least 20 more who think a chick in a pilot's uniform is HOTT!!

I'm still in college so I get the "what do you wanna do with your life?" question all the time. When I say commercial pilot its either "they make a ton of money" or "that industry is unstable right now."

What a conversation it was indeed. I also got: your wasting your education and training, it will be a huge pay cut, you will be gone all the time, the shoes are ugly (go figure that one), your life will be in jeopardy every minute (laugh now), and you will scare your mom. Only the last one is of any concern, and not so much. The ugly shoes are likely very comfortable. So I went looking for support and found this forum. People in transition need support. People who are stable give it, and for that I am thankful.

What about a chick flying a ratty Baron too fast, whipping it into the spot too fast, wearing a ballcap and racing to grab a bottle of wine?

:)
