AnywhereMap Question...

Cruising the net looking at toys I can't afford right now and ran into the AnywhereMap stuff. Seems like a pretty cool tool to have for helping maintain SA...especially with the WX and EFB functions that you can add on. The tablet PC versions they have are pretty cool but for $5K they're quite steep.

The PDA versions start around $700 and go up to $1700 depending on how you equip them...and I'm curious about something. PDA screens ain't exactly large, and even mounted on the yoke, there's an awful lot of data on that screen for you to deal with. Can you really safely fly an aircraft and get real utility out of such a little device?

I got a 496 and the screen is roughly the same size and it's big enough. You don't really need a tablet pc sized screen something like that would be awkward in the cockpit I think. Also anything without solid state memory can't go above 10k feet without damaging the hardrive.

They do offer two versions of the tablet unit that are totally solid state.

Interesting about the screen. Thanks for the information.

I have had the AnywhereMap system on the iPQ 4700 for a few years now. It has the XM weather and I have pocket plates on it as well. I also have a Tablet PC that I have run it on the the cockpit and I will admit it is hard to use the PC, but the PDA is not a problem. You can turn features on/off fairly easy as well. I like it and it has been nice to have on a few of my flights.

I have a 496 that I actually won from a raffle here :)

its a nice piece, the refresh rate is pretty good, I dont even think an avg pocket pc will handle the data and give you a smooth screen...

for the price, i'd prolly go for a 496, you really dont need such a big tablet pc size screen in the cockpit... my 496's screen is just fine, it sits on the yoke

oh also what is it with the solid state mem and 10K feet?

Above 10k feet a hard drive can't operate because the read/write heads have to float above the disk on a cushion of air. They will actually scrape the surface of the disk and ruin parts of it if you try to operate one too high. Solid state memory doesn't have this limitation.

Oh I'm pretty sure it can.

I also have an iPAQ 4700, and although I don't have Anywhere Map (Not yet anyway, no point over here) I do use it with a couple of different navigational programs, and I have never had any problem with slowdown or choppiness.

bbbbbbbbbbbbwhatthefugg?!!?!?!!?

why didn't FF win? I'm usually lucky: I win cake walks I stumble in to. I even won 13 bucks on a 5 dollar lotto ticket I got for xmas.

I haven't played with a 496 to know for sure, but I think there is more data provided on the AnywhereMap then the Garmin. I know when I got mine AWM had cones of safety and was getting a patent on it. I dont think the 496 has this safety feature. The processor in the 4700 is quick and no problems with slowdown or choppiness either. What was the senario that showed the choppiness, I would like to try and repeat it.

Not sure about the processor in the 4700, but they are recommending the Axim X-series right now which uses a 624Mhz processor. That should be fast enough for a solid-state RAM device (no I/O or bus bottleneck.)

Both the Dell Axim X and the iPAQ 4700 use the same processor, Intel PXA270 624 MHz Processor. The Axim X has 128M more ROM then the 4700, but the SDRAM is 64M for both units, and the SDRAM accounts for application speed.

The 4700 has a larger screen, but the screen resolution is the same for both units.

The Axim-X became the PDA of choice for Anywhere Map due to the fact that the iPAQ 4700 is now discontinued, and can not be readily purchased reliably.

I have had AWM for about two months now on a dell axim x51v with pocket plates and I think it is great. I use it for SA mostly amd I have put in alot of instrument flight plans and it is really great to have that added information.

I also like that it has taxi diagrams with your airplane depicted for almost every airport that is moderate size and I like that it will tell you where the cheapest fuel is in relation to where you currently are in the air.

The screen resolution is nice and I think the size of the screen is just fine. Another inch on either side would be nice but I think a tablet would be too large and awkward in the small cockpits I fly in.

Yeah, I think the size of the screens on the X51 and the 4700 are perfect. I have used both, with different navagation software (Land based) and they are idea.

Even thought I own the 4700, the Dell and the HP models are almost identical spec, with a slight difference in RAM and screen size.

Can wait to get AWM loaded on there.

Any idea what size the program is? Do you have it on a SD card, and if so what size? 512, 1024?

Not sure on the progam size and to be completely honest I am too lazy to get up and check. I do have the SD card that is 1024. The only reason I need that is because it holds every single approach plate for the entire US on it.

i have a cingular 8125 I was gunna get the anywhere map for it but its a dual core 200mhz or something, I just didnt think it would be fast enough...

That is what I was actually wondering really, what size card do you use and if it works for you.

I have European TomTom5 on a 1024Mb SD card over here, and I know I can only fit the program and two maps and then the card is full. I just wondered if whatever card you were using was big enough whereas you didn't need to do mid-air map downloads from a laptop! :nana2:

Ah, that's a phone, right?

Is it compatible?

It's technically compatible in that it uses the same OS, but it does not have nearly the horsepower. The 8125 is made by a company called HTC and it's sold as the Prophet or Wizard (can't remember which) if you get it un-branded. The screen is pretty darned small compared to the others, too.
I'm not sure I'd want my SA/Navigation tool on the same platform as my cell phone, especially since Pocket-PC-based phones are known for stability issues.

That said, HTC does make OTHER devices which may have the required horsepower to do this. It's an interesting idea.

Take a look at www.howardforums.com for anything and everything you ever wanted to know about cell phones and PDAs.
