Flying

Climbs and descents too, or just level flight?

Level for sure. I think climbs/descents are ok without A/P but I don't have time to lookup the references right now either. Off to TEB!

I was half listening to a conversation a DAL767 jumpseater was having with the captain. I swear he said that on the 767 they need 10,000 and 3 to even hand fly the approach. Otherwise it is an autoland everytime. Did I miss hear him as this sounds sort of strange.

RVSM requires the use of autopilot and altitude hold. If our autopilot breaks during RVSM, we have to inform ATC.

Dad knows the crew that flew FCO-EWR at 280 after the AP would not engage. Back when his airline did DUB-SNN in the Ireland flight he would do that AP off. He usually only uses it in cruise, espically a 767-200. on a -400 it might be on a little bit more.

I'm pretty sure that the FAA's minimum requirement is an altitude alerting system with certain tolerances. Opspecs may change and mileage may vary...
