I would say japanese autos are about as good, but they cost a little more to fix. Not as bad as european autos though. Mother of god. Those things aren't very good AND cost you a crap load to fix them.

I like this quote: "European car makers will use 6 bolts when 2 will work just fine". They definitly live up to this when they build an automatic. Perfect example: GM, Ford, Toyota, and most other manufacturers will use check balls in the fluild channels to keep the fluid from flowing the wrong way. VW on the other hand found the need to take something simple and make it huge pain in the butt for mechanics and make this spring loaded flapper thing that fits into place instead of having a simple ball bearing looking deal. It's stupid crap like that that makes fixing most european automatics a financial nightmare for the owner. It's not uncommon to see mercedes trannys cost over 8,000 to get fixed.

Case in point, my dad's 1999 Mercedes ML430 at 150,000 miles the tranny went out... the cost to fix? Over $6000. He fixed it, only because the car has been super reliable... other than the tranny problem. That truck handles so well... has a nice strong 4.3 liter V8.

At least most mercedes are worth fixing. I'd still shudder at spending that, but oh well. What is bad is it costs dang near that much to fix a VW jetta. :whatever:

Can you tell why I dislike VW. :) I take that qoute in my previous post as a joke by the way. There's plenty of european cars I will own. They won't have slush boxes though. ;)

Mercedes benz M class is made in Alabama.

That's correct :) And BMW X5's and Z4's are made in Spartanburg, SC. The engines are still from Germany...which is probably a good thing.

There's a reason why the first year M-Class in 1998 was an absolute disaster... that plant was so poorly implemented at first.
