Eating cheaply and somewhat healthy

Any broke flight instructors/regional pilots have ways of eating cheaply without buying Ramen or other crap that will kill me before I'm 30?

Coupons, avoid overbuying name brand items and Sams Club/ Costco....and cook at home. You can eat out, just not every night of the week.

I've never eaten Ramen much, just shop wisely and budget. I eat well every night.

Had a friend in college years back that got deathly ill...finally went into the doc for a diagnosis...dude had Scurvy...come to find out all he had eaten was Ramen for something like 60 days and was drained of anything like a vitaman or mineral...

Wendy's

99Cent cheeseburger
99cent salad
0 cent water cup

=

meal

also learn to cook, I buy the 4lb bags of chicken for like 10 bucks at walmart and that along with a head of lettuce equals like 8 meals.

Throw in some bread and various free condiments from your favorite fast food place and you can have everything from sweet and sour chicken, to BBQ sandwiches, chicken salads etc..

Rice and Beans!! Its what I do! Sometimes after payday I throw some cheese on there and throw it into a tortilla....mmmm

my cholesterol was just tested at 157, blood pressure 118/60. I'm 25.

This is working for me...although I've taken out the dried pineapple and replaced it with roasted/unsalted sunflower seeds and have taken out the wheat thins altogether. Still as cheap as ever. Get the hotels with free breakfasts (and lots of fruit in the morning) and you are all set.

Go ahead and laugh (ha ha) but it's cheap and somewhat healthy. Of course, it's sad we have to do this (use per diem to pay bills).

I knew a guy once who made "fajitas" out of tortillas and bac-o's.

Seriously, though - do you have Dollar General stores where you are? They have a lot of the same (or generic brand) food far cheaper than a lot of places.

4 lbs of lean ground beef or turkey, some taco seasoning, a couple potatoes and onions and some cumin makes a hell of a lot of caldillo. You can eat on it for days, relatively healthy.

The key is to make meals in bulk.

wow, why am I studying for my comm. and cfi tickets again.....why didnt I go to medical school AHHHHHHHHHH :(

I love starbucks ($5.50), also like Daphnes greek cuisine, my meal there is $8.61, In-n-out ($5.38), hmm that is a lot of coin on a daily basis huh?

currently going to bartending school too, maybe a couple nights a week at a decent bar and flight instructing during the day won't be so bad, I can still eat.

if you're eating out more than once every two weeks, (and by eating out I mean subway) you're *probably* spending too much money on food for your income level. If your significant other makes good money (say $35k+) then disregard. She can pay for it :).

I take one of the trays of ramen and mix it with a can on tuna and eat that since im not a big fan of the taste of tuna. It fills me up pretty good and costs about $2.

When I was crashpadding in Bayonne, I broke my staples down into CapnJim's Basic Food Constituents: Protiens, Carbohydrates, and... Green Stuff.

Protiens: Chicken is cheap. So is ham, canned tuna, eggs and beans. Milk. Gotta have milk.

Carbs: Dosen't get any cheaper than rice. And rice goes dern good with chicken and beans. But have some pasta, pototoes, flour and wunna' bred on hand too, cause rice is about as boring as it gets.

Green Stuff: I like raw spinach, good dolla-to-nutrient ratio, and it tastes good. But it goes bad if you don't eat it. So, cans it is. Canned corn, peas, collard greens, whatever. Just get some veggies in there. Limes, lemons and some OJ are good too. Keeps ya from gettin' scurvy. Survy! I love that story.

After that, you just have to have some fillers. Honey's good. Cheap and packed with energy. Peanut butter is the same way. Salt and peppa, mustard, mayo, ketchup. An onion. Budda or olove oil. That kinda stuff.

Then you just have to pick one from each category, throw it all together in some creative way that won't make you gag, and bob's your uncle. Cheap eats. Chicken, rice, and beans. Sauteed anion and ham pieces in pasta with a cream sauce made from the flour and milk. Mashed taters. Egg salad. So on and so on. Ad naueam.
