Subject: Cancellation of Vacancy 06-08

The need for Vacancy Notice 06-08 was based on expected needs associated with the signing of a new Air Service Agreement with Northwest Airlines. Since we have been informed that the likelihood of receiving a new ASA has been delayed and will continue to be delayed until we have a new pilot contract, we can no longer afford to carry a high pilot surplus. Therefore, Vacancy Notice 06-08 has been cancelled.

As the result of this cancellation, the upgrade classes on October 3rd and October 24th will not be held. In addition, the new hire class dates of October 2nd and October 16th will also not be held.

The status of any future classes will be reviewed as the class dates approach.

Buggers.

I have a friend here that is (was?) going, I wonder if he's in one of those classes.

Doug, if we're talking about the same person, he started class this morning. According to him, only 2 (at most) of the 8 ATP guys hired were in his class. As far as I know, his is the last class scheduled for a while.

His class wasn't affected by that vacancy. 06-08 was for the 10/2 and 10/21 class dates.

Since we have been informed that the likelihood of receiving a new ASA has been delayed and will continue to be delayed until we have a new pilot contract, we can no longer afford to carry a high pilot surplus. Therefore, Vacancy Notice 06-08 has been cancelled.

Translation: If you want to upgrade, sign this crappy contract. Surplus of pilots? We're still using reserves to cover open time, and there's a TDY posting in DTW for people to cover MSP CA shifts. Nice surplus. It's another item in management's bag of tricks to get us to cave, IMO.

TECHINCALLY, ATP can still say the guys got hired. They're just swimming in a pool.....let the marketing continue.

Yes, what was said was true and told to me on the first day of class (9-11). But then again the 9-11 class was cancelled and restarted a total of 3 times. There was a fresh interview class of 14 around today. Also, supposedly the contract talks are getting closer- but that has been said for a while. I dunno. Right now I am just focusing on finishing training and getting some time in type. If i get furloughed, thats life, but I hope PNCL and NWA both work out their crap.

Heh, who said the contract talks are getting closer? Union is saying "We're willing to negotiate," management says "This is our last, best and final offer," then they cry foul saying we aren't willing to meet them at the table. Last time we were at the table, they played the "Just say no to negotiations" card. Basically, they want the MEC to send the current proposal to the pilots, which would get voted down by about 98%, it's THAT bad. The MEC says "No, we're not gonna do that," management gets pissy, calls the NMB to "speed up the process" (THEIR words, not mine) and then puts the blame on us for not wanting to negotiate. Truth is, we're no closer to a contract now than we were 3 months ago.

I'm still saying the cancelled vacancy is a play to try to get people to cave for a faster upgrade.

Probably trying to split the pilot group as well. I've seen it happen before a few times.

There are probably enough mid-seniority guys on the verge of upgrading that will start to think, "Shoot, just let me upgrade, I'll make it up after the pay increase and get the hell out of here", senior people thinking "Don't kill the golden goose!" and enough junior people scared to death that they're going to get furloughed.

Not that there are, just that's who the company will try to reach to break resolve.

They'll probably start with a FUD campaign (Fear/Uncertainty/Doubt) and then turn the heat WAY UP so be prepared.

I was on the communications committee prior to a very short strike at my last airline. Airlines use the same textbook approach every time but for some reason national leadership never finds a way to broadcast what to expect.

Don't let 'em "Go Jet" ya.

They started FedExing letters to all the pilots and their families a couple of weeks ago trying to split us up. Once someone figured how much $$ it costs to FedEx 1200 letters on a Saturday, the odds of us splitting were about nil. Most of the senior guys don't have much of a golden goose to kill (hell, they're screaming STRIKE louder than anyone already), the guys on the cusp of upgrading are looking at the CA pay DECREASING on the new contract, so they're not too thrilled, and the junior FOs, well, we don't have much to loose anyway. I think management seriously misplayed that one.

They've already started the ad campaign to the non-pilots saying we're gonna put the company in bankruptcy, cost the NWA flying, etc. I've seen everything from "what are you pilots thinking?!?!" to "give 'em hell" from the CSAs, FAs and rampers.

It's gonna get worse before it gets better, but I think we'll pull through okay in the end.

Overall... This really sucks for 9E! I have a lot of friends over there and I feel for you guys... our FA's had been put through the ringer during contract negotiations... no new hires, junior manning, reserves and line holders were totally abused.

I really hope things work out for all parties involved... but mostly the "pilot" parties... not only for your benefit... but for the benefit of all contract negotiations to come at the Regional level...

Regarding the ATP "marketing". As Stephen said... those pilots are techinically "hired" and awaiting a class date now. Do we put down the folks on here who say in the announcements section that they are "Hired" at XYZ Airlines and in a pool to start? Do we chime in and say... "Umm... you better change your post since you are really just in a "pool!"

Heard from another source (who shall remain nameless) that JetU is telling people that the cancelled class are actually due to politcal manuevering to put pressure on the negotiations, yet PCL management has told JetU to keep ramping up operations for future classes. Something has to give on that one.....
