Comair Crash today (fatal)

That was not a stupid question.

Exactly, its good to your facts straight. Don't hesitate to ask questions.

On a related note, I got a call from a guy from MSNBC this morning wanting me to comment on the crash. I was in Canada, so my phone was off and didn't get the message until this evening. I have no idea how on Earth how this guy got my cell phone number! The media can be quite resourceful when they want to I guess. Needless to say I am not calling back.

Exactly. He wanted a quick off the cuff reaction. As if I or anyone would have a clue as to what happened this morning. Especially me 2000 miles away asleep in Calgary. As many have already said, it is best to let the investigators do their jobs and for us to wait patiently and learn from the unfortunate events this morning.

Thanks guys. As a young pilot (only got my PPL two years ago) I still have tons and tons of questions about flying and am aware there is lots I don't know (even before there is a crash and my boss wants quick answers from aviation experts!)

By the way, thanks to this thread, I was able to get ahold of a good definition shot of N431CA and get permission from the photographer to use it on-air. The photo was broadcast (along with a photographer's credit) on our international broadcast just about half an hour ago. If anyone out there has access to cable, the show is broadcast every hour on NHK World, or NHK Premium. (NHK is Japan's public broadcaster, like PBS in the states or BBC in England). Anyway, thank you all!!

I can imagine it is extremely trying to be somehow connected to a tragedy like this and get multiple unsolicited calls from reporters. It must make you angry to have the media jump to place the bulk of the blame on "pilot error" without waiting for the results of an investigation. But please remember, as reporters, we are also under a major time crunch to gather as much info as possible, and get it on the air. While there are a lot of knowledgeable folks out there, there are just as many people who just want to feed you their take on things (ie. speculation) and get their face or comments used on-air along with a super that says "expert." It can be hard to locate the trustworthy sources in a news situation where minutes count. It is also a challenge for us to seperate fact from fiction from speculation at times, especially when dealing with a subject we know little about and that tends to change every day (medical miss at local hospital--> plane crash in KY--> Iran's nuclear program...) I am grateful to have this resource to ask you all about the parts of the story that I do not know.

Respectfully,
Lauren

NOT STUPID, GOOD.

MEDIA ASKING CLARIFICATION = GOOD.

Sure beats making stuff up.

Angelina Jolie is sooo reckless in her Turbine powered SR22

I hope he survives, and maybe he'll be able to tell his story. I haven't heard much about his condition other than he was in critical condition and underwent some surgery earlier today.

I feel so bad for him. I couldn't imagine being in his position, the only survivor. :(

I think if I were the FO, being at least partially responsible for not recognizing using the wrong runway, I would wish I were one of the deceased...

Have a little respect dude. What if the guys family comes here to read the boards. The last thing they need to see is him getting slammed about skill. He could be the best stick in the world, but sometimes THINGS can happen. How would you feel or your family feel after an you have an accident and to see someone post trash like that.

Compared to their regional peers this crew was experienced, which makes it even more unbelievable. As part of an airline with an outstation philosophy going to the same 2-3 airports over and over, this gives added motivation to fight complacency when I feel it setting in.

dou and admins....pardon the english here.......

But PKR what in the heII are you talking about? Have you listened to the CVR yet? Oh wait they haven't released it yet..You, I, or anyone else have absolutely no idea what was said in the cockpit. For all we know, the FO did bring it up and CA said nothing. Or it could be any other combination of things that happened.

Have a little common sense here.

Ever heard of survivor's guilt? I believe that's what pkr was referring to. I doubt he meant any disrespect.

Yea, I have heard of it. So what! PKR has no idea who was responsible for what. None of us do. Maybe PKR would would wish that he (PKR) would be dead, but that's his own deal.

He's laying blame on the FO and has as much evidence as we do, Not Much. We don't know who told, whomever what to do. Until the NTSB finishes their investigation, the rest is all a bunch of information. Leave it alone.

That's the disrespect I am talking about.

I think that just shows the sad state of our society - accident happens and no one needs to be blamed - I think you would be amazed how many people have taken off, or tried to take off on the wrong runways here. I am sure there are some that have, and do not even know it.

Which only supports my assertion that the left seat of an RJ is where you go after having been a 74/75/76/77 FO, not where you go before becoming a 73 FO.

Me personally, I'd rather have a CA with years in on that specific airframe than a guy switching from another airframe to get an upgrade. Just look at some of Doug's stories about guys coming to the -88 as CAs without being FOs. Oh, and that's a MAJOR, not a regional.

I don't wanna be the guy in the right seat going, "Uh, that might work in the 75, but the RJ won't do that." Doesn't really up my confidence in the CA much.

I didnt see anyone mention the retired USAir CA that CNN yanked on their program yesterday. I think it was CNN. Anyway, he was really concerned when he found out the pilots had arrived into that airport a little after midnight and he seemed to think they might have only had only a few hours of sleep before that 6 am showtime. RIP to all aboard.

Does Comair do standups? I know some crews like them, but I won't do them. I also refuse any scheduled duty days over 14 hours. Fatigue cannot be messed with. (not inferring anything to yesterdays crash, just info)

I'm not sure. Someone said they had "more than the allotted rest" but if you're on a CDO, you're not on "rest" per se.

That's assuming it was a CDO, which I don't know.

What is a CDO? Just curious.

Here is the latest update
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/14552288/ . Im still wondering. Did the tower clear them to use runway 22 ??? The NTSB rep was on the Today show this morning and said they listened to the tapes and there was TALK about runway 22. Is that a yes,no,maybe or a we cant say just yet? The way it sounded is that they were told to use it but there was never an official "Shuttle 5191 cleared for takeoff on runway 22" from the tower.
