Routed and Re-routed

Every time I fly from the southeast to the northeast, it seems that regardless of what IFR FP I file, I get re-routed about 4-5 times. Even if I file far west of the DC area, ATC still re-routes me with a new plan. Last week I flew to Bridgeport, CT (BDR), ATC re-routed me 5 times, thats right I said it, 5 times. And to top it off, the route lead me about 40 miles north of BDR then back down. Thats just wrong man, what is up with ATC

But I'm getting my money's worth out of that Garmin 530 Flight Plan function, lol

The 135 outfit I used to work for did a few flights up to the NY area. I never got the chance to take one, but the chief pilot said he could always count on the re-routes starting around the Waterloo VOR (ATR) and continuously be issued until he was out near Long Island. Eventually, he'd be re-routed back onto his original flight planned route. He actually asked an N90 controller once about why the hell they did this to him and what route he should file for next time to avoid it, and the guy just said "I wish I could tell you. The preferred routes vary hour by hour."

On another note, he and an IFR student went from our home airport, about 40 miles north of ORF, to Harrisburg, PA. The most direct airway route was over the BAL VOR, but when it was all said and done, they ended up way out west of Dulles, over LDN.

Yeah I've actually tried filing a route that they have given me in the past that wasn't too bad, and low and behold that one would get rejected too. On the way up to CT I flew so far west of DC I thought I'd eventually end up over montana before it was all said and done. Then on the way back they routed me right over the top of JFK, go figure

well I'm not sure what you mean by "preferred". I mean yeah I've filed those too, doesnt seem to matter much, they still re-route me all over the place regardless of whether its listed as preferred or not

As someone who did all my training at KBLM, just on the Mode C Veil of NY Airspace try routes that take you over Coyle (CYN) VOR V1 JFK to go EAST of BDR. Not sure what type of plane you are in but if you are between 4000-8000 9/10 they will bring you right over JFK, with little fiddling with the flight plan. I did countless trips to GON, PVD, MVY, and ACK that brought me over the top of JFK. East to CCC then on my way. If I went from KBLM to KSWF, I would be sent out over Allentown, PA!

File direct so you don't have to crack open the TPP since you won't get anything you want anyway. Or cancel IFR if you can in the air so they can't reroute you. It works wonders in the DFW area.

It can't be that simple all the time!

well I dont believe that the sole reason for all that re-routing is because LGA, and JFK just happen to be sitting along my flight plan. It seems like more often than not, they re-route the crap out of me going up, and then pretty much direct coming back. Sometimes I fly a Caravan and sometimes a Navajo, and Im usually held at around 8000 to 9000 feet
