Riyadh airport attack by missile, airliner destroyed

Houthis are claiming responsibility and have stated they will make air travel over Saudi Arabia unsafe. What a sad state of affairs the world is in. Three fatalities so far. No passengers on the plane.

Even without things like short/medium range missiles, the simple evolution of drone warfare makes any aircraft, parked anywhere, be it civilian airport or military airbase, open to getting destroyed. Be only a matter of time before an aircraft gets taken out on takeoff or landing.

And no one is really prepared for this, just see the medium sized drone that was buzzing east of Tucson airport and all around the ramp at Davis-Monthan AFB one night a number of years back, until the operator realized he was being chased by both the USBP and Tucson PD helicopters and he decided to hightail it to the northwest with both in pursuit.

At one time, worry was someone perhaps firing military munitions like a mortar outside an airfield perimeter fence and destroying some planes on the ground; or a stolen MANPAD and taking down airliners far from the airport on their departure climbouts or arrival descents. Heck, no one needs to go through the trouble of any of those old outdated ideas anymore.

In this case, it was a ballistic missile.

I really don’t think I’m doing that inaugural flight at the end of hte month. LOL

Wonder how a ballistic missile targets an aircraft on the ground? Or maybe it was a lucky hit.

it’s a general area weapon, as targeted, versus a precision strike weapon. Broadsword versus a scalpel, basically. So a lucky hit on the particular ramp area where a plane happened to be parked. possibly may have been targeted at the terminal itself, and didn’t hit the center of it, Not too different from the Iraqi Scud missile attacks of Desert Storm.

Another source says cruise and ballistic missiles were used. Who knows.

You never know. It may be rainbows and unicorns in less than 30 days 🤣. Sounds like they have the same hope Brown has about getting us back into Dubai.
