I had to go look. List price in 2018 when I bought it was already $850, but with a trade in older model Zulu it was $600.

Yeah it's insane. I'd be surprised if they cost $300 (for the top end models) to manufacture.
My Axis has already outlasted the cord on my Bose.

My headset had to be repaired after 7 years of use, cost $200 which I think was their flat rate for an out of warranty repair.
I do like the idea of the Axis, I hate lugging a full size headset case while commuting.
Even the Axis Bluetooth model is pushing $1k though. And it looks like the older one is out of production.

To be fair, that's kinda like saying "I sold my Honda at 3 years for no reason, and I bought a Toyota and its been running fine for 4". Are these replacements to be expected? Or are you guys seeing new things and replacing old because you want the new thing, I guess is my question?
I was definitely tired of the over-the-ear headsets and was looking for something new. The $300 cord replacement was the last straw. I begrudgingly bought the Bose while I was instructing because the old David Clarks were toast after years of training and instructing. So no, I don't buy headsets for fun, but I also could never wear the big clamp-ons ever again.
Yeah I was disappointed to see the price of the new one. I can't imagine that bluetooth box costs much more than $50.

-new basic David Clamps during student pilot days
-used OG lightspeed Zulu when I started flying 135 (from a guy on here)
-new Zulu 3 when the OGs had a problem and were no longer supported

We have to wear them in China, so that's where they get worn the most. Also where they're needed the most. Although dealing with Dhaka and India without a headset would be a pain as well.
I just did LAX-SIN, and that was the longest I went without a headset in flight. It was nice.

Had a couple iterations of Zulus. They had a nasty habit of the plastic parts decomposing into this slime that attached its self to everything. Traded my 1 and 2 in for a pair of 3s at one point, but I can’t imagine sitting in a box for a few years has helped. I did make sure to remove the batteries first.

They make smaller ones that are cheaper for jewelry. Would probably work well enough.Don't balk at the price; an ultrasonic cleaner is great for lots of things beyond just your earwigs.

I remember a little of the peely plastic on my OG Zulus, but haven’t had any issues on the 3 and they’re 8 years old at this point

Yep, NG’s with no vortex generators are painfully loud. As a glasses wearer, in ear is king to avoid glasses dealing with ear cups. My custom molds provide amazing PNR that I’d bet was on par with current ANR. Others can PooPoo it if they want, but for my money the clarity aloft is amazing.
