UAL CEO said he uses this hiring tactic to vibe check job candidates

One of my CFI's was a new hire and struck at UA in 85 (he was on probation). He walked with the ALPA guys and got fired. All those new hires got back with full seniority in the end. He's retired by now. I feel that was a watershed moment for union pilots. We should be glad they stuck it out as it benefited all of us for many years. I didn't understand unions back then as I didn't make it to a major until 1990 or a union airline until 87. Had I been a couple years more advanced in quals I would have been qualifed to be a scab. Not sure if anyone will ever get released to strike again ever in the history of pilot unions. But it's imperitive to make sure potential replacement pilots are educated and understand the history and repercussions.

Yep, I was one of "570" that didn't cross the line May 17, '85. Many of us were big supporters of ALPA. If you look closely at the side of my plane, you'll see a red circle "No Lorenzo" decal.

I feel like '85 wasn't the year to be hired at United (or most other places) other than maybe in hindsight.
Actually it was but not by UAL. By late summer of '85 UAL hired back all the striking pilots. It took a while but like DE727UPS said they got their May 17 hire date back. We had a class of 32 at the airline I went with. With various mergers I became a NERD with Derg. 2008 was the turning point for most major airlines. Prior to that we all suffered through lay offs, pay cuts, and BK's. Since 2008 there has never been a pay cut.
