Prior military flight experience and hiring?

I'm an air force pilot with about 600 combat flight hours and Supervisor of Flying (SOF) qualified at my squadron. Unfortunately, medical issues have me being separated from the Air Force here soon. I wrap up my ADX training and oral next week.

What effect, if any, will my prior military experience have on my hiring process?

Your leadership and flight experience are great. As long as you can read weather, NOTAMS, approach plates, and enroute charts, you will be fine (which you have plenty of). That’s most of every written test for regional airlines. The interview process is how confidently you correctly answer their questions, which is mainly asking you more basic dispatch questions. Any HR questions are pretty basic. We have plenty of former military that were not in aviation but have the leadership skills.

Good luck.

Looking to come to a regional skywest is open and a good starting place
Thanks for the advice! I'd rather avoid Utah if I can at all help it. I have been eyeing up Horizon/Alaska because the Seattle area appeals to me quite a bit. GlobalX and some of the cargo carriers don't seem like a bad gig either.

Have you looked at working over at Scott AFB? They do flight planning over there and you pretty much have to be either a government employee or a veteran.

This one closes today (GS-12)

And this one is open until May 8th (GS-11)

And since you have 600 hours I assume you are a bit older. I would stay away from the regionals unless you want to be stuck making $40k-$50k for a few years and MAYBE get somewhere better. GS11 is about a high warrant officer where GS12 is O3-O4 pay.

Going to be realistic Holding out for Horizon is going to be rough they are small and rarely hire in small amounts. The rough part of dispatch is it's challenging to hold out for the Airline you want if it's going to delay your way into the field.

There's lots of work in AK for people with your kinds of skills, not sure if that's kind of the thing you'd like to do or not, but there are always people looking for flight coordinators, etc. then there's the local 121 ops.
