UPS Retire MD-11s

It is expected to be announced on their call this am - rumot has it the spouses were pressuring executives to get them back on trips.

I (err my wife) can certainly relate to this......

"you're in a foul mood, we're both arguing about everything, I think you need to go on a trip"

Was at ROW where there’s 9 UPS MDs sitting along with one from Western Global, probably gonna get parted out. I saw 275UP sitting dead here in west cargo at PHX, sad sight.

I'm pretty sure the MD's at KROW have been there a long time. Pre-crash. UPS had been downsizing the fleet for a while. The post crash MD's are scattered about.

What did UPS do with their DC-8s when they retired them? Were they sold somewhere to keep flying, or were they scrapped?

None of them were sold, to my knowledge. Did you see any at KROW? I thought I saw one there a year ago. In any case, they are beer cans now. Just like the 72's.

AerSale purchased all the DC-8 assets including sims and STC rights. Most were parted out immediately. I’m curious if they found buyers for any.

From what I understand, no ferry permits have been issued yet and I've heard rumors there aren't going to be any.

That would mean UPS would either have to wait until (IF) she's airworthy again or scrap them wherever they left them. Purple would be left with having to fix them wherever they are and send the tooling, engine change stands, etc, into the field.

There could be a cottage industry of salvaging/scrapping MD's where they sit. If I'm Dodson or White Industries I'd be looking into this and starting to solicit bidness.

If @derg had a brain he'd name me "JC Vice President of Grift" and I would buy some aluminum and paint some brown and some purple and cut them into keychains etched with "Official JC MD-11Scraps in memory of @CK and @mikecweb" with "proceeds going to a good cause" and sell them. Hell, I might do it anyway.
