UPS MD-11 crash at SDF

Not really sure who would be interesting in buying an airplane that you can't legally fly and that gets zero support from the manufacturer. Airplane nerd who wants to make it their home, maybe? Still would end up being cut up and driven off the airfield in pieces. Could probably turn the fuselage into a swanky night club or rave since they don't have windows anymore. Maybe if one happens to be grounded somewhere like IAD where there's a museum on field might buy one and keep it intact, but I'd imagine they would get salvaged for usable parts then cut up into pieces that fit on a semi trailer and hauled off.
Seems like the writing was on the wall before this. The AF tried to auction off the parked/stored KC-10s in their unflyable state and none of them sold. I don't recall what the bid reserve was, but it still surprised me that none sold. Then again, I haven't dug into too much...I ain't got time for that. ;)

I wonder what's gonna happen for 10-Tanker, what a blow.
They are a good tool and get used a lot.
Yeah. I'm wondering the same. Coulson annouced a 767 conversion program. If they don't get the DC10's flying again maybe that would speed up. There was a 757 conversion sitting in Blytheville, AR when I swung through a year ago. Didn't appear to have any engines.

Yep,
and Neptune was moving on Airbus 319 platform. Not planned until season 2027 but who knows.

Most of the carriers and would-be carriers that would be interested just don’t have the cash.

So, it takes a leasing company to put together a deal. A leasing company is going to have a number of issues with this deal. First, if the carrier defaults on the lease, who else would want to lease these aircraft. A leasing company doesn’t want to get stuck because there’s not a market for DC-10’s.

Beyond that, nobody knows for sure how much it’s going to take to get them airworthy. Boeing needs to design a fuselage patch needed after refueling booms were removed. They are going to pull some avionics for security reasons and some of that stuff will need to be replaced. Eight of the ten planes are missing one engine. Heavy maintenance, most carriers are going to want a fresh D-check, another blank check. Modifications required by a carrier? Cost? So many questions.

The FAA recognizes DC-10 equivalency for military KC-10 pilots. Otherwise, is anybody operating sims or issuing DC-10 type ratings? I guess you could type in the air.

GSA is an As-Is dealership with no warranties.

Have heard from a couple purple buds that their take is FedEx did maintenance on their planes, while UPS did not. I mean obviously this is pilot rumor mill, and also obviously maintenance was done to the UPS fleet. But i too wonder if other stuff was found on the UPS jets.

I learned that big brown was the devil when I worked for a feeder. They do not care about human life other than in how it moves the bottom line. Not that any of the others are any better, but little companies have the advantage of the leadership having to look you in the eyes while they •ed you. Small companies are often just as crooked, but there's something particularly evil about pretty much all organizations when they get above a critical mass of employees because of the abstraction between people and process. I couldn't tell you where that line is, but "motor oil" is exactly right. And before people misconstrue this as some dig at UPS, it's not - they're not really any different than any other shop. Your job will never love you back because you are motor oil, and do we care how much oil we burn? Only when it's causing problems elsewhere or may lead to issues elsewhere.

During peak I remember some young guy with a bull horn yelling at little old ladies to unload a truck "FASTER FASTER!" Peak is right, peak absurdity.

You're not wrong.

I loaded trucks in college at the big hub in the STL area. Employees are just a commodity to be used up and disposed of. You're nothing but a production metric to them. I also learned the importance of a strong union there.

Looks like the replacement for the 11, will be the 76? 🄱 And not the 777? 😔

I keep trying to make "fetch", happen!

They may not be wanting to replace the MD11s at all. They kicked Amazon to the curb because it was too low margin and they just announced they're slashing another 30,000 operational employees in the latest earnings. The goal seems to be to shrink to increase yield. Domestic revenue was down this year, which was expected, which to my understanding, is where the MD11s primarily operated.

I know folks have been yelling from the rooftops about the impending...well, call it what you will, loss of over exuberance. The split between the have and have nots is getting wider and I am seeing more and more large scale lay offs. So, shrinking revenue across the board accompanied with the ponzi scheme that is big tech these days (I think the kids are calling it the Fab 7 now?) well, I am not very hopeful that there isn't one helluva "correction" (or reset as I would call it) on the horizon.

Sorry about the drift; it is interesting news about FedEx keeping the -11. I assume the big brown wouldn't have much interest in selling their -11s to FedEx much as I can't go buy one of their old sweet ass brown trucks. It will be interesting what happens to them...off to Africa, or scraped?

We had porta potties on the 72. One day the porta potty was deferred (I'm not kidding, as in removed deferred). We are doing YYC-RFD and were supposed to be done for the week and go home. We get an ACARS to divert to SDF. Nobody wanted to go to SDF cause gawd knows what happens next. Capt tells me to get dispatch on the bat phone and tell them we will be diverting to RFD for physicological needs. I'm like, "tell him what".... So I tell him and we divert back to our planned destination of RFD and go home. Never heard another word. It was a ferry flight as I remember, no cargo. Gutsiest move I ever saw.

I’m waiting for a retiree to write a tell all book. Besides the senior daddies/mommas being great to fly with the stories are amazing and jaw dropping/hilarious. I honestly don’t know how my or the subsequent generation would deal with the shenanigans you all got thrown at you.
