I too love seasons. Amarillo is currently 22 degrees. McAllen is currently 80 degrees. Texas is a wonder emporium because you can experience winter and spring. In the same day.

I'm generally against the cold and not wild about it, but I've really liked VT the few times I've been up there and while the CoL might be high, I bet it's lower than most of NYC, BOS and some of the other tier-1 markets I've looked at. I should visit/explore.

Yeah, I'm not thrilled about being a permanent commuter but I believe the tradeoff is worth it. Besides, I've only got a few years of this nonsense remaining so it becomes moot.

With the continuing displacements around here I have been telling everyone senior to me that is getting the boot that CASDI will bleed you dry and there is a high probability of gang rape on the walk to the hotel on Century Blvd.
 
Geographically CA is a jewel, but it's not a great place to live and it's not because of the state income tax (although that's a contributing factor). It's the over regulation of anything and everything that inevitability leads to anything and everything costing more. A good example is the "rebuilding" from the fires in LA last year. Many of the homes that were destroyed in Altadena, the Palisades and Malibu are not being rebuilt because they were older homes that don't meet current regulations and they have to be completely re-engineered before any permits can be issued. And I understand that after a big fire there's going to be a lot of scrutiny regarding new building in a fire area and trying to mitigate the risk in the future. But I've seen videos online of the one beachside property in Malibu that's being rebuilt and the foundation is going to cost $2.5M for a 2000 sq ft house (and that doesn't include the house, just the foundation) because they're required to drill dozens of holes for reinforced concrete caissons 60' below surface grade and build a sea wall and it has nothing to do with fire safety. Meanwhile 1 mile up the beach there's a pier thats been there for a century and it's sitting on wooden poles pile driven into the sand and everything mounted to them is wood. @derg mentioned building a pool in his backyard, I've had several friends do the same thing in Southern California and what was supposed to take a few months and cost $50K ended up taking over a year and costing north of $100K, some of that might have been a shady contractor but it was the same story from all of them and it always was about permits, inspectors and new regulations. You can't build anything in CA without the state making it twice as expensive as it should be and at the same time they complain about a lack of housing and the cost of it. No developer without a friend in Sacramento is going to build anything, it's just not profitable and it's all self inflicted by the state. There's a reason why large corporations are leaving and it might not be why you think they're leaving, they're leaving because nobody wants to move to CA and they can't hire talent to replace folks exiting either the workforce due to retirement or the state because the quality of life they're looking for simply isn't affordable there. No one wants to live with a homeless man pooping in their shrubs everyday. I love California, I lived there for over four decades and have traveled to or through most of it and it is truly a special place, but I left because living there sucks these days and at 54 I need to think about the time I have left. I am truly jealous right now though, we're going to freeze this weekend and they're going to have above average temps. When I lived there these arctic blasts were just something I'd hear about on the news. I'm still happy about my choice.
 
my favorite thing is to watch low brainwave individuals leave california and go full texas by regurgitating whatever take the All In podcast inserted into them by suppository this week

I'm not a Texan and I'll never claim to be one. I can't claim California either although that's where I grew up. If anything I'm a Colorado native but I haven't lived there for almost five decades. Why the hate for Texans? In my limited experience, with a couple of exceptions, they've been nothing but welcoming and helpful, maintaining that relationship requires me being polite and helpful. A neighbor called a couple of weeks ago and asked if I'd take him and his wife to the airport early one morning, they were going on a two week trip to Italy and his wife had heard Uber drivers sell info to gangs to target empty homes of the people going the airport with big suitcases. I immediately said I'd take them and that went fine. His payment to me? Breakfast tacos. I don't dislike breakfast tacos, but I prefer a hearty breakfast burrito. I'm still looking.

ETA: Everything is not bigger in Texas, I almost missed the AA dropoff at KSAT because I thought the terminal was bigger.

That's totally worth the commute!

Also, I'll have you know, I just spent most of my commute back home from meetings trying to figure out what pond you lived on. I was thinking Lake Dunmore originally, but then realized the scale was all wrong. Took another 2 hours, but the island and lone tree on the point finally gave it away!

Smugglers was always my backup if I didn't ski Sugarbush... that whole area is amazingly nice.

Is Vermont snow worth traveling? I grew up in CA and it seemed like everyone wanted to travel to the SW for epic rides. What does Vermont offer that makes it special? Or is it Harbor Freight skiing?
