Bad financial decisions

This is my question regarding Pitts. I can understand the appeal of the Pitts - I love them. But what is the point of Ultimate wings on a Pitts? There probably are less than 100-200 people that can get everything to be had out of a stock S2C off the factory floor in Afton. If you're looking for more performance (thinking competition) - I just don't know how you can modify the Pitts to beat the monoplanes. Airshows and maybe those wings would allow for some "weird" type maneuvers - like Rob Holland used to do. I just never got the point of the Ultimate wings - why not just go monoplane at that point?

Beat the monoplanes? Probably not, with the little wings, full length ailerons, spades etc you can get pretty darn close to the same performance at what used to be significantly less money. If I recall it’s an 11ft wingspan with mass centralization. That being said- it was not comfortable to fly. I got a few hours in it and never really wanted more tbh.

Thanks - if you had to choose - Zivco or some other high end monoplane, or a Pitts like you describe that was uncomfortable - I assume you'd take the monoplane?

Will you promise that the tail stays on (looking at you Cap/edge) lol. Right now? Honestly neither. I don’t compete, and I don’t want a plane that goes that hard. If I were shopping at the moment I’d take a pitts for the gentleman's aerobatics. Kind of like why I enjoy racing a Miata more than a corvette (or similar big displacement sports car).

That’s cool and all… but SW-51 might be cooler:

Has an Extra ever come apart in flight? Are they still competitive?
