UPS MD-11 crash at SDF

Of course it's always sad when an airplane crashes. I didn't know any of the crew, but I think the reason this one hit's a little harder is probably because like many of you, I'm in that UPS jumpseat area several times a year. It's always full of people talking and laughing, catching up with friends. It's sad to think this is likely what they were doing just an hour or two before. Then walking past that jumpseat area, out to the van pick up, completely unaware of what was to come.
I don't want to jump the gun on what the cause was, but I can't help but think, if only this plane had been assigned to one of the domestic runs in the northeast. Maybe it wouldn't have had as much fuel and the outcome possibly different.
Condolences to those of you that knew them or are part of the Brown family. Like I said I didn't know them but have been thinking about it a lot the past few days, so I know it's likely much harder for you. May these guys rest in peace, and their families and friends find the strength to carry on.

I keep getting questions from friends and family about this accident. All I can offer is an engine fell off during take-off and I have no idea why. Some folks think because you work in aviation you have the number to the red phone in the administrators office. I've been through this before just wondering how any others here handle it, if it goes on too long I just start making up nonsense and then hope to see my gibberish quoted somewhere. Happily I've never read my nonsense repeated anywhere, but I'll say very strange things like an alien fighter drone sacrificed itself by diving into the engine of a heavily laden cargo jet during take off. The phone gets real quiet or the text/email chain stops pretty quick. How do you folks deal with that aspect of our lives?

Flew for the first time today since the accident. Definitely a different feeling walking up to the airplane and through preflight. But pushing the power up for takeoff it all instantly became normal. Saw a full moon rise over SDF and then a beautiful arrival into Boston.

I was behind a FedEx going into Boston this evening landing on 22L. What time did you land?

We were in the Crashpad together when I started in ONT. If you know ONT you know there’s only one Crashpad in the area and the people that are there together are pretty tight knit.

I remember showing up the first evening looking as lost as I could be. We went to the grocery store and he helped me navigate crash pad life. He was pretty happy to get SDF on a vacancy. I remember dropping him off at the gateway on his last day at the pad. This one is a gut punch that’s going to take a while to come back from.
