This industry sucks (rant)

Yeah, @MikeD 's whole post was 🔥, and it's one of the few that really feels responsive to what I'm saying rather than people attempting to give advice tailored for someone else (perhaps themselves, or their younger selfes), or attempting to air their own grievances in my direction (degrees, pay, etc)

I haven't had time to respond, but I really appreciate it, and it resonates with my heart.

I still love flying. Every leg, every crew, every situation. I love my people, even the passengers. We're all a big dysfunctional family, but it's my big dysfunctional family, and I love taking care of them and getting things done safely and well.

I'm still an airplane nerd, still love warbirds, still want to fly tankers, miss flying acro.

My only complaint about my current job is the schedule and the inability to get time off. (Well, also getting hassled/threatened about sick calls when I'm legitimately sick and have doctor's notes. That's another big one. A friend of mine is grounded from flying with vertigo, possibly due to barotrauma from flying with a head cold.)

But it's a big complaint. It's a big problem. And there's no real improvement on the qx.

I heard DEC mentioned and it seems to be the result of the QOL woes you’re mentioning, and the unfortunate result of a seniority-based system the airlines employ.

I’m sure you’re aware of this and the reasoning behind you looking to move on. But maybe something to keep in mind as you weigh the pros and cons of this career and whether or not to stay. Is it worth enduring the reserve life knowing there is an end in sight no matter how long it’ll take? There’s no amount of advice on here that’ll eventually push you to make that decision.

But there’s a positive perspective out there that says at least you get to make that decision.

I should also say that I do good trips from time to time… the one I'm on now is nice so far.

The thing is, I don't have any I think we're the numbers and we still have like we're not we can't get out till 48 so wasted time actually 10 minutes before start check this please

Sounds like you could use more sleep.

In all seriousness, I'm not sure I would advertise such a sleep deficit publicly, as the available science does not speak favorably of your fitness for duty in those situations.

Dear god, please say thats photoshop. Whatever that drug is….just wow

I can't remember what city started this now, but I believe it originated in the PNW. It is truly sad. Meth is bad, m'kay?

Side note, I remember being at a bar over the holidays maybe 15 years ago. Some guy shoves me on the shoulder and says "hey AMG! long time no see" or something to that effect. I couldn't recognize him at all. Turned out we had gone to high school together 10+ years before, after he told me his name. He obviously had succumbed to meth, just totally looked like a different person, missing teeth, sores all over his gaunt face. It was like looking at a dead person. He must have either recovered by now, or is 6 ft underground.

Yikes. Lost my younger brother to the stuff this past year…glad it was never my vice.

Further sidebar: (for context I grew up in SoCal) the day i got my final 214, i remember glowing in the kitchen when I read it…my partner asking why I was so happy. “I can finally try ‘stuff’”…her response as she sipped orange juice from the jug (without skipping a beat) ”youre a pilot….” Apparently what followed was an immediate draining of joy from my face.

haha so true. In another couple decades I guess I can see how the other half lives :)

Anyway,back to OP.
Yea. S. You have ALOT of friends, and many who have youre back, but at the end of the day. Its your call, its your life. But please sleep a bit before making a rash decision.

Believe me, I'm aware.

It's frustrating to me that we have to do "fatigue awareness training" which basically details how bad the airline lifestyle is for our alertness and health, tells us to get eight hours of sleep at the same time every night etc, but then at the same time get repeatedly told that it's our responsibility to ensure we get rest no matter what they schedule us for—not just for our assigned fdp, but for any fdp, with automatic extensions.

Also for everyone, kinda swamped rn. If I haven't answered your questions or responded to you it's because it would take more time or focus than I have, not that I'm ignoring you.
I totally understand. I can pull several pairings from our bid package and if you look at them you’ll realize that if you get a solid 8hrs of sleep during one rest period you may not be able to get enough sleep during the next rest period which may and should lead to a fatigue call.

Idk what SkyWest has in place to report issues on the line. Here we have event reports, in Widget land they were called FCR’s, at least they were when I was at 9E. Either way PLEASE utilize these things if a pairing or line is fatiguing or whatever the case is. You’re experienced so you know this but there’s so many people who run to union/company forums with issues and never file a report so the union nor company has a paper trail.

Take time for yourself and get some rest. We’ll be here ready to help.
