Air Canada FAs on strike

This got me thinking about logistics leading up to a strike, since I hadn’t thought about it previously. Say a strike is set to begin at 0001 Saturday AM. You are mid trip on an overnight that Friday night when it begins. Do you just walk off and non-rev home on a different carrier? How about it you are on a redeye, and you take off before the beginning of the strike, but land after it has begun. I guess I’d assume the MEC would put out guidance about this, but just curious for conversation sake

The “pro union” minister of labour has used her powers to refer the union and company to binding arbitration with the Canadian industrial labour relations board, as well as a back to work order. The CIRB has not formally issued the order as of yet.

@AMG this very issue came up, the union presented a wind down/wind up plan to the company which was rejected, and the union informed the FAs that when the CBA expired, and strike action commenced they would not be entitled to any CBA provisions nor pay for anything and that they would be on their own for hotel and getting home. The company tried to tell downroute FAs that this would not be the case but the company was quickly proven to be lying on this matter, that FAs would be on their own down route and only pilots would be given arrangements to get home. as a result their was an “abnormal” amount of sick calls from FAs in the last few days.

Other issue is a last minute deal. Now I’ve non-revved away from my overnight at 8pm, and at 2359 a deal is struck. Now I’m calling off for my 0630 show, and it’s on me.

But Jazz flights are still operating. Wouldn't that be considered crossing the picket line?
The company said from the beginning the only flights that would be operating would be AC express flights operated by Jazz and PAL airlines. Both companies are not owned by air Canada. Seperate unions as well.

Normally other airline's pilots (or FAs in this case) work to get them on the jumpseat (with a cabin seat as normally the company will pull CASS right away) to get home. Also, sometimes a union and company will agree to a wind down plan so the planes all get back to base (with out passengers) before the crew walks off the job.

A striking union will normally allow other carriers to keep operating, as long as they don't add any flights, without considering them scabs.

Hell, I flew with an FO who recently told me how he has to make a certain number hours of GS pay a month to make his finances work out. Guy has a full USAF pension to boot!

Oh boy. You already know he’d scab-out in a millisecond!

If you need regular premium flying to support your lifestyle, it’s probably time to cut something out because this industry is a fickle bitch when it comes to financial and career “expectations”.

God, I can't imagine relying on even half of a line guarantee to pay for my life, let alone premium/GS's. Most months I don't even get an eskimo paycheck. What are these guys thinking?

Probably next door to the guys constantly complaining about our commuter policy that do two-legs to a base because he didn’t want to give the wife the bad news that commuting from rural Cacalacky isn’t sustainable.

haha......yeah. Probably this. Unrealistic expectation meets horrible incurred lifestyle. I do truly feel bad for these folks. And I hope she is super hot. I'd be perfectly happy living in a sailboat in Des Moines at 5 mins from the mothership and no wife spending $12/mo if it meant that I could just chill. Luckily my actual wife is super not about fancy things. She is embarrassed by the Honda Pilot I bought her. Which is the least ostentatious vehicle known to man. I don't know what would make her feel better.....a Suzuki Amigo?

A bankruptcy, two pay cuts, a hostile takeover bid, a merger, COVID, 9/11, “Live like a new hire!” :)

He was also griping about how he missed the upgrade boat by a few months and could really use the extra cash. I just did a little WTF inside and began to wonder how many no-fly lists the guy would end up on if he did upgrade. Assuming he passed OE, which given his proclivity for thinking SOPs were more like guidelines than rules was a matter of some amusing internal debate. Kept me going for the rest of the trip at least.
