Skywest ERJ vs. B-52

I mean per usual there isn't a whole lot of information. The state fair grounds do seem to be close enough they would've been in the Class D so Tower should've been aware of both of them. The B52 could've been paralleling the final for the flyover on a downwind basically. Still weird to me to make drastic maneuvers on final instead of just going around and climbing out. Then the long explanation to the passengers is a little much imo. A basic "I apologize there was some confusion between us and another aircraft but everything was ok" would've sufficed. But like I said not nearly enough information to know how serious this was.

The closest near mid-air I have had in an airliner was with a flight of two military jets near MOB. Idiots had no transponder on and turned them on right as they came into RA range. No TA, just an RA.

MOB approach was pissed.

I honestly wonder if the B-52 was rocking their transponder.

Only one jet would be squawking if in standard formation, wingman would be in standby. The old mil IFFs I flew with, Mode 3 would be wonky, and unfortunately civil ATC can’t see Modes 1 or 2 of the system.

They were on with MIB RAPCON before changed to tower, so I imagine their Mode 3C was squawking. These were probably the only two larger aircraft airborne in the area at that time. Fairgrounds just south of the field. Would figure the two aircraft would’ve been advised of one another being in the general area what intentions were.

“Cluster” is putting it mildly.

You can definitely over share on a PA (and end up internet famous). Not sure how much charm school new skippers go through at SKW but for us it was minimal on PA usage.
Sometimes less is more. If they truly had a window full of B-52 then that’s a tough one. Probably would’ve been a flight deck door closed deplaning while I take notes for the ASAP & event report.

Fly bys always turn into damned cluster chucks and half the time the mil pilots just start ignoring you at some point and do what they want. No idea if that happened here, just ranting.

Unrelated but it pisses me off so much that we go into a hold for 15+ minutes (once a sup even told center to let a guy divert if he was min fuel) just so they can do a damned fly by over Met Life for a football game.

As a consumer, I would have appreciated the PA. From our side, I would have called off the plane feeling very grateful for the crew - which might be why they received the ovation they did.

I’ve always appreciated crews who provide sufficient details during a delay or other IROP. Funny enough, it’s usually always regional crews.

I am curious for the results to come out and to see if it actually was a near midair or an over reaction, or just an RA which may or may not mean there was actually any risk. (Seriously for every 10 RA’s I’ve seen 9 are caused by VFR traffic 500’ above/below and everyone is level or the IFR traffic levelling off 1000’ below/above just had a higher rate of climb/desdent than normal)

It looks like ATC never warned the B-52 crew about the RJ. Ugh.

“But regional FAA radar facilities do oversee traffic all across the country and help direct planes in and out of airports like Minot. The Minot airport typically handles between 18 and 24 flights a day.”

the approach control for minot is not FAA but DoD

I like seeing flyovers at events, but it seems like more trouble than it worth in some spots. Also, seems like a place DOGE could have saved the tax payers some money.

We don’t talk about military waste, only taking grandma’s prescriptions away.

WE MUST SAVE!!
