Safest Airport in the USA vs. Busiest Airspace Region in the World?

More travel spots for me to investigate. I could even drive to one of those. It's interesting that both of those are in busy cities too.

I can see that Santa Monica is for GA however I'm reading that Meigs Field was bulldozed overnight without notice by a Chicago mayor in 2003...?
yeh, meigs was shut overnight. SMO is getting there as they shortened the runway. Two cautionary tales of GA flying.

Why would they even do that, though? I can't think of a reason why they'd need to shorten a runway, or shut it down when it's working just fine.

because local mayors and airport neighbours have issues respectively
Oh...That explains it. I guess trimming the runway limits the air traffic, doesn't it?

That was saddening to read.

Mayor Daley no longer dines here. He’s dead sir.
Well I hope he rests in peace. What he did sucks, and there probably should have been a different mayor, but what's done is done.

On a happier note, I learned that what it takes to make an airport, first, is a good runway. A tower and an instrument approach can be added later. I think that's pretty cool.

I always liked the GA planes flying around in the area where I grew up. They're not even noisy. The freight train blowing its horn at 3am is much noisier, but I like the freight train too. It's like hearing the roosters crowing way too early.

I like our little rural strip at the nearby park and I have always liked driving out to a field across the international and watch the planes come and go (until a very large company build a huge warehouse blocking the view). I used to stop and watch GA aviators having fun in their planes while I was at my old job (I worked outside often)

I would have liked to visit Meigs Field while it was still alive. It looks really unique and, in my opinion, added more value to that area than a park. A park is a park. They're good, but they don't add much distinction to a neighborhood or city image. Meigs field did.

I guess my only option now is to play older versions of MSFS.
