Capt Happy goes to Southwest

Let's see here. . .approximately 8300 pilots at SWA? 800 sign up to picket? 10% give or take.

Hmmm. . .not about pay? Seems like a teamwork thing to me.

Is this like Tom Brady complaining because someone is calling the wrong play? Lineman not blocking? Receiver running the wrong routes?

1. Title should be edited to “Oh Southwest VII”

2. I kinda agree with the SWA pilot. If he had just pitched over and landed, nothing would change. Now that he’s gone around, tower has to know the reason - and that stuff gets tracked. Have enough go arounds for these C172s being head-on (apply directly to the forehead!) with a 737 on final approach course, then perhaps they’ll start vectoring them better for next time.

Isn't that where all the refineries are? I would have thought they would have a better inspection technique....
Refineries are on the SE side and over the border into Indiana along the lakefront. But something is over there obviously.

  1. Must follow RA guidance without a very good contravening indication.
  2. No longer stable on approach.
Beep-boop, go around. File an ASAP and maybe ask for a number to call if you're still feeling sporty after closing-out the leg. Litigating over the air just keeps that YouTube channel in business and upsets the people that sit behind desks and move slowly, sometimes against you.

but the entertainment value tho…….:)

that kind of stuff is just monitoring right of way typically, looking for digging or incursions near the pipeline
still pretty hard to beat the cost per mile operating a bare bones 172 with a low time pilot

To be fair, the last time a controller tried to vector a poor lady around multiple landing SWA aircraft in Texas, ended up a smoking hole in the ground after multiple go arounds.

To be fair, I find it difficult to compare these two events. Just because it has ATC instructions, a female pilot, and a Southwest aircraft, doesn’t make them comparable situations.

I was an ATC'er before RA. I've had air carriers get an RA from my aircraft and climb more than once, I don't really get it.
  • I'm at 4,500 10 miles off shore heading for Catalina. Straight and level, altitude hold engaged. Busy airspace.
  • SWA is at 5,000' off the Santa Catalina VOR on an extended radar downwind for John Wayne.
  • ATC has called traffic to both of us, I've reported SWA in sight.
  • On ADS-B I see SWA is climbing, later reports to ATC he got a RA and had to climb.
Here's what I don't get.
  • Vertical separation of 500' between a VFR and an IFR aircraft is considered adequate.
  • An aircraft that leaves an assigned altitude without a clearance used to be a violation.
  • Who assumes fault if the RA caused a separation error with a 3rd aircraft? Say traffic at 6,000' heading for LGB?

Here's what it said in the FAA approved manual where I used to work. I'm sure they are all the same:

Compliance with TCAS Resolution Advisory (RA) is necessary unless the pilot considers it unsafe
to do so, or unless the pilot has information about the cause of the RA and can maintain safe
separation (for example visual acquisition of, and safe separation from, a nearby aircraft on a
parallel approach).

About the only way for SWA to not follow the RA is if he has you in sight and is COMPLETELY sure you are the target that caused the RA. We are trained to follow RA's and that's what the the book tells us to do except under very specific circumstance. There is no fault. I've heard stories about one RA causing another RA and on and on. November Echo has mentioned that before.
