Car vs control tower at KYKM

Huh. Same day I get an email from the company that we have no mechanic in YKM for the next couple days. Coincidence?

That sounds like what happened a few years ago at SLC. A mechanic had a medical event while driving around the FBOs, hit a parked plane and kept going.

Gat-dang, that car must have been sailing. They went through the yellow bollards in the foreground, hit that large green transformer, travelled across the driveway, and then ... hit the base of the tower a good six feet off the ground?!

Base on the lack of foundation under the transformer, and cables strewn behind it, I'd guess that the transformer was relocated to its final resting place by the vehicle.

Looking at photos, I can't even tell what kind of car it was. Something with a ICE; maybe a BMW?

“Authorities report a 19-year-old man accused of crashing his car into the power boxes and control tower Friday morning at the Yakima Airport has been transported to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle with critical injuries.

If the driver survives, he could potentially be facing vehicular assault charges,” Stephens said.

Stephens said they believe the driver was intoxicated and the possible vehicular assault charge stems from the serious injuries suffered by the 23-year-old Yakima man who was a passenger in the vehicle when it crashed.”

from the article:

“Commercial flights are temporarily halted. Non-commercial flights can operate, and will need to call out their position, Vera said.”

commercial flights are unable to call out their own positions? :)
I know for a fact that I've flown into YKM atleast 100 times doing traffic calls on CTAF!
