46 unfilled captain positions and 157 unfilled 777/787 first officer positions on the vacancy that closed today. Junior captain is a late 2019 hire on the 737 in LAX. Absolutely unreal that there are unfilled captain positions at a legacy airline!

Every year since the beginning of time Kit said there would be a pilot shortage. Eventually the odds would be in his favor.

The day a major hires me, I'll agree there's a pilot shortage.

Is it? How many airlines actually furloughed people vs giving them paid vacations? I know both happened, but I don't feel like that's accurate.

pretty nuts to think I could have just upgraded in base if a year ago I hadn't left thinking I was about to be furloughed.

Yes you did. Covid said hi. And make no mistake, if it wasn’t for the billions in US government money, you and I would be furloughed. Everyone keeps saying “never in wildest dreams.” Well, never in anyone’s wildest dreams did anyone think taxpayers would pay pilots to literally sit home and do nothing (re: PSP).

Looks like things did a 180, thanks largely to the government PSP and bailout money.

Keep this in mind, it’s the airline industry. People don’t really “need” to fly (as the pandemic showed from March 2020). Today things look great for the future. But it could ALL change and at some point we’ll have our next downturn. Could be anything. War, terrorism, virus, economic downturn, etc.
