I read the entire transcript from UPS 6. very sad. As I read, I couldn't help but feel the a small fraction of despair and fear the pilots must have felt

I despise those batteries when they're on board. But we've gotta move freight, so we do it.

I've talked to a few guys who were around at the time, and they all seem to think that the reason the C/A didn't ever come back up front was because he'd freaking fallen through the weakened floor of the upper deck in to the conflagration below. If I DID have airplane nightmares, that would be at the top of the list. Potable water is a "no-go" item because everyone takes "walking the deck", including putting a hand on every can to check for heat, VERY seriously. And even freight-swine wash their hands before they eat after doing that.

IIRC, the NTSB or somebody managed to zero in on the pallet that started it and it was a pallet of lithium batteries underneath the hump.

IMO (not a whole lot), I think he was overcome with smoke. Probably still in the aft portion of the flight deck.

And you can correct me if I'm wrong, but IIRC, on Swissair the QRH (unlike other checklists/books in the flight deck) was found with burnt-fused pages. After the extinguisher ran out, the CA was literally swatting at the blaze with the QRH. :( He also never made it back to his seat.

That was my natural assumption as well. These dudes seemed fairly positive, but they weren't really willing to say why. Which is understandable, because it would mean that they'd sorta "found out" stuff that wasn't made public. Either way, the genuine stuff of nightmares, for sure.
 
Well hell yeah man, good going! Glad you're breathing and I enjoyed reading the discussion, like others said, people have bought the farm for a lot less. Nicely done.

On that note, have any of you ever had a door pop open in flight flying GA and thought to yourself, "So, this has been a big enough distraction to kill a lot of people?" (even read a Citation report where the baggage door opening was the only issue but they wrapped it too tight in a turn and stalled distracted by it). It really doesn't take much, and I don't mean that in a way as to speak ill of the dead so much as to reiterate that sometimes...it really doesn't take much. I guess none of us know how we'll respond until it goes down.

Mid to late 2000s sounds about right. I happened to be in a position to see it, I think the only reason I actually paid attention was because it was departing to the north, not unusual but also not normal ops. It was not the first airplane I'd witnessed buckle but it was the last and and I hope it stays that way. Witnessing people die, regardless of what they're doing sucks. YMMV.
