Twin Cessna down in San Diego. UPS Driver killed sitting in his truck.

Bad situation. Clearly.

In the big picture, insurance for older pilots in complex aircraft was already unobtainium except those already with a carrier. That segment has already taken eye-watering losses over the past 5 years with the owner flown turbine segment and several underwriters have left the market.

Shut the hell up
You really don’t see it going this way? People don’t like living next to smaller airports as it is, and these crashes happen frequently in the public’s mind.

Plus the war on fossil fuels is just getting heated up and there have been articles about lead in aviation fuel (100LL). I wish I could be more optimistic.

agreed. The fights to close airports has been gaining steam. Locally the town of East Hampton has voted to close HTO. Safety and noise being the driving forces behind it for the public. Development money for the land probably the deciding factor for the town.

Wow! HTO is closing?

Interesting column on it ...

The two attached comments to the article are even more interesting.

Anyone got data on the greenhouse gas emissions on a Citation excel vs a 757? Also the numbers of each version daily flights?

Give me a break.

You’ve proven in the past that math and statistics aren’t exactly your strong point. But are you actually suggesting that emissions per person isn’t significantly less for a 757 vs private jet?

That's crazy. Just doesn't make any sense. Some guy at my ex-airline is blaming ATC for loading him up. Like maybe they changed runways on him. Still on him. You gotta fly the airplane.

I disagree with ATC loading him up. They told him early on to expect ILS 28R circle to 23. That is a common approach into that airport and he has been doing it for 10 years there.

Unless your goal is everyone at zero emissions the premise of your argument is invalid. Pax and cargo companies pumping out 1.04 billion tonnes of CO2 cannot justify that by trying to break it down by person moved. That flight would take place whether the airplane is full or empty. Ask me how I know that. When I was flying empty jets last year.

A company flying an excel twice a month for a grand total of 10 hours isnt anywhere near the same contribution.

1)Cargo planes weren’t flying empty last year. Ask me how I know!

2)Pax airliners are hardly every flown around empty. The exception was last year and some international flights this year. Absolutely meaningless in the scheme of things.

Once again, you fail at logical thinking.

I’ve met the pilot a few times and have some time in the accident aircraft. He also owns a RV9 so while possible it’s a Jerry moment, he was also mid 60s so I would say it’s more likely a medical issue

This one hit close to home, literally not far from our house. I appreciate your insight on his aviation background and I hope it was a medical issue. Although yesterday was uncommon by San Diego weather standards (40 knot winds aloft, moderate turbulence and broken layers) I’ve got to imagine he’s encountered it before if he was making the same commute for 10 years. And like @Inverted said the ILS Rwy 28R circle to land Rwy 23 is the status quo on these rare windy days, and the controller was NOT loading him up (that is not busy by socal approach standards).

I try to reserve judgement on these things and hope you all give me the same courtesy if I ever perish in an airplane, but this one has been especially tough for me. If he suffered a stroke or other cognitive decline in flight then I have sympathy for all involved, it’s just an all around tragedy. But I won’t lie that my mind didn’t immediately go to Jerry Wagner’s video of FALLING OUT OF the ILS into Oakland in a nose down unusual attitude in a spatial disorientation/graveyard spiral, and the blatant parallels with this accident. Jerry has really become the poster child of the wealthy Twin Cessna commuter owner pilot demographic (sorry @SlumTodd_Millionaire lol) and it’s difficult not to assume you guys are guilty until proven innocent.

So to reiterate, if this was a medical issue that led to a cognitive decline then it’s a sad tragedy all around. But if my neighbors’ houses burned down because somebody chose get home itis over instrument proficiency then I’m going to be pissed.

To the non-professional pilots who read this forum, take an extra moment to ponder the concept of instrument proficiency vs. currency, what it is you’re trying to accomplish with those 6 approaches, holding and tracking courses every 6 months, and the ramifications not only to yourself but those unwitting people on the ground just living their usual lives. There’s no shame in evaluating legal minimums vs personal minimums and making a new plan and going somewhere else.
