Cathay working on single pilot long haul

Why do people think they have to talk?

Once had a trip with a captain who briefed me about how quiet he is on day one, told me not to be offended that’s just how he is.

We had ONE 20 minute conversation during a four day and it was the most relaxing work experience I’ve ever had.

Pilots are boring people. Boring people don’t have good stories.

You know who has good stories? Total screw ups. Good old fashioned degenerates. That’s who I want to talk to at the bar, not Frank The Pilot who won’t shut up about his mortgage.

What makes you think a pilot can’t be a screw up good old fashioned degenerate? :)

Personally i love talking to the screwups and their stories. Especially now that I don't volunteer for the union.

Well

All the hardliner IT and FMS believers are 'gonna" tell you that what the autopilot is for or that AI will take care of that in the future

GIGGITY

The fact its tried on long haul cargo first tells me the lawyers and faa are all thinking the same thing.

I suppose, gonna be tried. Not testing yet.

So are psychological evals going to be a part of this, conducted regularly? I bet that German Wings guy was okay, until he wasn't.

We keep two people in the cockpit at all times for a reason. One of them being the security of the cockpit, from those who are already in it. The older I get the more I understand the fast food restaurant scene with Kirk Douglas from Falling Down.

"Can anybody tell me what's wrong with this picture? Anybody? Anybody at all?"

My face every once in a while when a non-pilot computer nerd brings up the topic of “pilotless airplanes are gonna happen,” while talking as if they know more about airplanes than pilots themselves.

I just recently saw that movie. What a hidden gem! Awesome all around, and yes you totally understand his mentality as the day progresses.

Eclipse aviation is still around right? Go fast and break things, seems like a revolutionary way to build a plane to me! The tech guys really showed us how to innovate in manufacturing... Of course cessna really showed everyone how do to it with the "ground catcher".

I like the idea of lie flat cockpit seats like the 10X, I just wonder if people are going to be willing to pay for that unused real estate.

Keep in mind that a Category 1 rest facility must be isolated from the flight deck (and cabin area). Obviously the FAA could change that, but once you start pushing 12 hours of flight time, a lay flat seat, even with a curtain around it, no longer cuts it.

May I just point out the irony in this?

Gonna have to start carrying an empty Gatorade bottle again.
Years of working shifts alone in the ramp towers and driving uber through SF where public restrooms are hard to come by saw me drinking a lot of Gatorade. Nice circumference.

Um, some of the most degenerate screw ups I know are professional pilots. A few years ago when my buddy was throwing EDM concerts, I got to hang out and have low key human conversations everyone from famous DJs and their staff/Tour Managers to people at record labels. I was totally expecting crazy stories, and while a few delivered, the vast majority of them were actually...boring. The conversations would always turn to investing, travel, their home/family, how grateful they are to be where they are, ect. I learned a lot of people in the spotlight who party for a living are otherwise pretty normal, don't cheat on their partners despite how easy it would be, don't over indulge much in drugs or alcohol even though they're readily available, take good care of themselves with good sleep and daily exercise to keep up their appearance, and actually usually contribute to society through charity though their take home pay is usually only about what many mainline captains make. The average pilot I know is close to the opposite LOL. Outside of being good at their job presumably, many professional pilots are absolutely crazy human beings that combust into bad judgement when you just add alcohol. NJC 2010 and "Hurricane Gulley" was by far crazier than any of the 8 EDC Las Vegas events I attended since then. And now all those people are at legacy carriers or LCCs, secretly sleeper cells capable of epic nonsense. I have heard first hand stories from guys on this site way crazier than anything I've ever heard backstage at a concert, in a bar, driving Uber, ect.

But you know what trumps pilot stories? Stuff I've heard in towers, TRACONs/Centers, and just hanging with controllers. Talk about degenerate screw ups. "I was selling fake coke to tourists and pimping a few girls with no future but jail or death, then I got into NAVY ATC and it straightened me out". "Hey, did you hear our NATCA rep got arrested for being a serial bank robber?". "We knew Freddy Mercury was gay, and we were good looking teens, so we figured out which hotel he was staying at and flirted with him in the lobby like we were up for a gang bang, got pics with him, and then ditched him at his own party and did hundreds of dollars of cocaine and got laid. Imagine that at 16".

Controllers. You can't handle controllers. If it works out for me to get in, I'm sure the conversations will be one of the best parts.

In tech, when new technology comes out, it is embraced right away. Tech engineer friends can't wrap their heads around an aircraft like the 767 which entered service in 1982 with late 70s technology simply being retrofitted and produced some 40 years later. The people that would program this stuff think that everytime a 737MAX, A320NEO, 787, A350, ect comes out that all the airlines would just instantaneously replace their fleet for max efficiency, not fly a plane for 20-30 years. Kind of like how when I was out of work I applied as an operator to the first proposed drone delivery service, which was to be in San Bruno, CA with steep terrain covered in powerlines, high winds, and frequent bad visibility, and I asked them what their plan was to fly in the bad weather. They hadn't considered the weather would adversely effect deliveries in their flying drones. They already had contracts and permits to legally deliver medical devices and prescriptions via drones...and they hadn't realized that.

Yeah, I don't exactly think there will be pilotless airline flights in my lifetime. These guys don't get the mess that is aviation, just their idea of how it should be.
