Belarus being Belarus

It does. If a person is getting riled up about something happening in a faraway land, it'd be nice if the said person had the ability to locate such land on a map.
I don't think I could find Mar-a-Lago on a map (Beyond FLL) but I know some people who frequent the place need to spend time in prison.

Yup, the time we lost a motor over Kamchatka with Petro right below. Nah, we gonna keep flying east until we hit Americanski soil.

Yup, though it is nice having that as an option for the really bad stuff. Depending on the cargo, I wouldn’t worry that much about Russia messing with us. We fly over them all the time and even do the occasional charter. If they wanted to mess with us, they have their opportunity.

Yep, company basically says don't land in Russia unless you're on fire or a have true no poop emergency. Wouldn't let dumb international politics keep us from ensuring crew & pax safety but due diligence is fine if you have time to sort things out.

meh you don’t need to know where something wrong happens to know it’s still wrong.
That's one way to look at it.
Another - there's no own freedom to be protected in a faraway dumbyouknowwhatstan at the cost of limb and life unless some politician that's not gonna go himself tells you there is.

Belarus is going to Belarus. They’re still cranky the Soviet Union broke up. They’re really nothing more than a puppet state.

I’m not surprised this isn’t getting more coverage, but it’s kinda a big deal.

until it’s your flight being intercepted and forced to land in order for the local authorities to detain passengers.

Sad fact that NATO membership or no, when Putin decides to roll the tanks into the Baltics, there won’t be any willpower in the US, the UK or the EU to stop him until it’s too late.

I agree that support for going toe to toe with the Rooskies would be thin on the ground, but it's kinda non-optional by treaty, and I believe our political/military establishment (Deep State, if you will) would see to it that we lived up to our treaty obligations. It would certainly be a political disaster for whoever was in power at the time.

Appears that the journalist taken off the flight is reportedly in critical condition in the hospital. Probably just a coincidence….

A single Belarusan fighter jet joins on you and tells you there is a bomb on board. You're about 1 minute from the border of Lithuania (judging by the circumference of the standard rate turn), and like 50NM from Vilnius (just eyeballing it on Skyvector), likely just about to reach up to the mode control panel to dial in the descent. He says you need to go to Minsk which is 100NM away.

WWYD?

The answer to this question depends entirely on whether you think the Mig will actually start shooting at you.

The Trumpkin Twitter Brigade was in force saying "But what about when THEY (the USA) forced down Evo Morales' plane because they thought Snowden was on it!!1!"

That was the Kremlin to GOP to Red Hat Rubes line of propaganda yesterday. Except, Morales' plane was denied entry into French and Portuguese airspace, and was given 24 hours notice. No bomb threats. No agents on board. But other than that exactly the same.

Honest question to you and anyone else. Given the Russian appetite for murdering civilians via shooting down civil airliners (KAL 007, MH17) and you are flying over Russia, or a Russian puppet state and see a Mig off your wing - would you doubt they'd shoot you down?

I'm doing what the guy with the boom-booms demands in that case, as miserable a choice as it is.

Because (1) I've no idea if Commie One-One is a single-ship and (2) it's what's in the AIM. And (3) I won't be doing ACM in the airliner.

you forgot KAL 902.

About 6 or so months after 9/11, a 727…I think AA….was headed to DFW from I believe SAN. Had some kind of radio issue and wasn't answering ATC east of EWM. The closest and only fighter jets available to make an intercept were German Luftwaffe Tornado IDS jets and F-4F Phantoms out of HMN that were not far to the north in the R-5103 area and were vectored by ZAB to intercept and go take a look at what was going on. Turned out it was a simple radio issue, but one could imagine seeing Luftwaffe jets marked with the Iron Cross pulling up alongside.

And had it been a 9/11-style hijacking where a shootdown was deemed time critical and necessary for some crazy reason? Would be German AF fighter jets being directed to shoot down a US-registered civilian airliner of a US airline over US soil and airspace…….wow.

“How lost ARE we?”

If I was that German pilot, this is what I would claim ;)
