Those of us who have spent the past 12 months living around the clock on Zoom have a bit of a different perspective on it, I think. Things like Zoom and BombBomb were still a little esoteric prior to the pandemic. Now they're definitely not, and a whole lot of old boomer bean counters now see the benefits. I don't think salespeople will like it, but they won't be doing a lot of handshakes going forward.

Yeah but pilots are a weird bunch.

I’ve talked to *so many* people who are like “for the love of god, I would give any non-essential body part if I could move my family to xx and commute back to yy once or twice a month”.

There aren’t that many jobs that pay $10k+ a month. And they tend to be in very specific places. There’s a lot of people for whom it would be very much worth it to spend $500 a month in tickets to be near family, mountains, the coast, etc.

Agreed. My company was increasingly cognizant of travel costs well before covid.

We have a big office in Denver that I did/do a fair amount of work with. Pre-covid I met with the folks up there over Skype quite a bit, but I would still go up a few times a year for 2-3 days to get face time with them.

That’s the model I suspect will become more common going forward.

Folks I know, at Fortune 50 Companies who have spent the last 12 months on Zoom can't wait until it is no longer part of their daily work vocabulary.

What we're already starting to see is that many companies are cutting salaries as a result of the distributed workforce. When you can choose from people all over the country (or even all over the planet), you no longer have to pay those crazy Bay Area prices to attract the best talent. So those $10k/mo jobs will be replaced with $7k/mo jobs that are distributed throughout the country with no need for flying in to work.

Interesting you made the choice to identify them as Boomer bean counters...These people and the Boomer leaders their decisions inform are the source of a large number of woes and lack of trust that is hobbling our society.

Companies who are guided by these principles of profits over people crafted to perfection by that generation will very soon be left in the dustbin of history. Trust is one of the main things that has made our weak-bodied species so incredibly successful. It has to exist in order for high functioning teams to exist in business. It is a biologically wired, hormone driven requirement. There is no such thing as virtual trust. You are overstating this new paradigm that you say we have crashed into. Will businesses go back to doing business in person in time to save American? Solid maybe. Will the businesses who prioritize face to face collaboration and relationships over costs win in the end? Yes.
