Okay curious. What do these colors indicate? The other week we had some overnight precip and a southern jets A330 was at the gate and viewed from the tower it was noticeably orange tinted. The rest of the jets on the ramp appeared normal from the tower. He eventually taxied out like that, got on the runway, and then returned to the ramp to deice. While deicing, it appeared he was sprayed with some green tint before eventually all the color was washed away and they taxied back out to depart.

The dyes are mostly included for ease of consistent and complete fluid application—the “did I get that spot or not” phenomenon. Failed fluid is dull and patchy; fluid that is not failed is glossy.

It’s entirely possible, in the case you describe, that they did not get any anti-icing fluid at all, decided to wing it (pun intended) with Type I (which does have limited anti-icing capability but is primarily used to knock stuff OFF the airplane - and is dyed orange...) and then realized they were caught with their pants down and needed both I and IV.

More than one snafu bucket standup rocket thinking they’d be cute and only get Type I watched us taxi out with I and IV (despite not “needing” Type IV) in MSP in the evening.

Any number of reasons to go back. I've had holdover times expire more than once and have to get sprayed a second time.
