LAX Fedex Incident

And it has to be done correctly. The inertia reels stop at preset lengths. And the handle is designed to be held at chest height. In one is unable to do that and allows the handle to extend above their head, there’s a chance they can hit the ground like a sack of potatoes, before the inertia reel system engages. If there’s time to don the harness and clip it in at the waist as designed, that’s better.

We have the diapers as well on the 747. I've seen plenty of videos as you described where the reels don't activate till you're almost on the ground.

To answer the question of the dude in the video...yeah it's a new one. 2017 build according to the interwebz. I don't see another pilot so I'm guessing that's the F/O. C/A may have taken a look at the results and decided he was comfortable where he was for the time being. I'm no expert, but he didn't look like he was like life-threateningly injured, so there's that, at least. Although broken bones as we age can be surprisingly unpleasant. I just flew with a guy who took a tumble on a wet floor almost a year ago (late 50s, I'd guess, very fit for his age) and he still has to walk sideways down stairs. Eek.

My dad busted his ankle just after new year’s. He’s had surgery and PT and still walks with a limp.

I would pay a lot of money to try out the ATC tower evac system

Oh please dear lord spare us all. Should we all hold hands and recite "High Flight" for the brave dead landing gear parts?
We need one fainting couch and one set of pearls STAT!!!
It’s more about what if an accident occurs in the future and fatalities result. Joking about waiting for the next one is ridiculous. If you’d like to discuss the point with grown up thoughts (and not using words like snowflake) please feel free to come catch a ride on this exact airplane I fly.

you take life too seriously. None of us are going to make it out alive.

In a situation like this would you shut down the engine that’s going to be scraping or would it not make any difference in terms of fire risk?

On some turboprops, it’s a definite “maybe.” I’d even say that in some of these situations, keeping all of the gear up (if possible) might be a better option.

Aluminum props tend to bend under low power with ground contact whereas composite ones (Cheyenne 400LS, Conquest II) disintegrate. I think there are pics out there of a few of these ground down to the hub, plus a Dash-something with a blade protruding from the cabin. A second consideration is that those aluminum props will dig in and “pull” the aircraft off the runway. There’s a nice pic of a KA 200 at APA that had this happen. The weather and OEI climb are also considerations. In the 200, it’ll pull to the right, and now combine that with a stiff crosswind from the right and you could have a more pronounced controllability issue during the skid. Like a said, a definite “maybe” because there are a lot of considerations.
