Oh Atlas

I think there were many incidents at Hong Kong's old Kai Tak where 2-3 pods struck the runway with 747s landing in gusty winds on that curved approach. Seems easy to do in the 747 compared to other birds.

This is the sequence of one of them:

If that's in meters per second, then 19 MPS is 37 knots.

Aviation has become so safe that when you even land a plane, able to walk away and the plane can be used again the Internet bob hoovers will still Tom Brady the hell out of a landing incident. I’m sure the crew will have a solid debrief, it was gusty and who knows at what point the gust increased or decreased causing this issue. Glad the crew and majority of the airplane is okay, live to fight another day.

It's because most of this is actually really easy, but some people still manage to **** it up, and the rest of us are left to wonder if some random bogeyman got them or if they just sucked.

I remember a similar incident at Dragonair about ten years ago or so. Wind got the first pod and the overcorrection got two on the other side. The danger in the 747 are the inboards mostly. You'd have to work to strike the outboard too.
