Oh United

The official word is classes are temporarily suspended.

Word on the street is that they suspended next week’s class. I hope they didn’t because one would infer that people have already given their two weeks notice.

The company apparently cancelled the class that starts on Tuesday on Saturday night.

Have yet to hear anything from the company or ALPA.

When I got my class date (checked my answering machine remotely, back when that was a thing, on a layover in Fayetteville, NC, after eating at Cracker Barrel...it was a GOOD evening!), I just so happened to have two weeks of vacation starting when I got home. Called up the Chief Pilot, gave him two weeks notice, effective after my vacation, AND took two additional weeks off prior to class.

PDT wasn't a bad gig back in the day, but I was so over the regional thing, I needed a break. It was almost two years before I flew a line more than 72 hours.
Supposedly my old shop had a habit of essentially telling people “in that case, your last day is the day before vacation, we’re just gonna end this now.” I think you still counted as “giving them two weeks” but still. I tried that trick but realized if I worked one more day I’d have health insurance for another month. Took a week of vacation, commuted up for one reserve day, then peaced out.

That really sucks.

The worst thing is that I was giving my copilot the “old man chat’ about basing financial decisions on continued overtime flying, profit sharing and career projection charts.

“...If I’m going to be a 350 captain in ten years, why shouldn’t I get a bigger boat?”

Yup.

Not always.

A much better plan overall.

APC rumor says the company is now calling those in the 3/3/20 class for clarification of the situation
Great effort by the current UAL pilots and MEC if so

Unlike other airlines, AS required a one month notice if you want vacation paid out when you leave.

I know for fact one guy going to Delta on March 9th. I wanna say there is a guy going in the March 3rd class at United. Some of these guys leaving were 5 yr FOs. That’s a lot of seniority to leave behind. I hope it works out and it will, maybe just not right now. Regardless it would suck to go from $180k+ to 0 for any extended period of time.

Canceling a class not only inside two weeks but 3 days. Classy.

Wow.

One of the biggest concerns I had about United when I was given a CJO was crap like that. When I was hired at SKW, there were a couple of guys there that had started over three times due to being furloughed at United twice in quick succession.

Ultimately I decided my current employer was a better fit as I felt like they stood by their employees better. After making that decision, I've often wondered if maybe United was now a different airline. Clearly not, as they have absolutely screwed a bunch of people that probably quit their jobs already.

My last day at compass was the day before I started class at Azul North, for this exact reason. Not that they have a history of this kind of behavior, but the history of this industry is nothing if not instructive.
