I live in Tierra del Fuego island, Argentina. There's a ARA S2 Traker that just departed from my airport, and last night there was also an FAAR C-130 doing SAR.

The Drake Passage is nasty, and almost no sea traffic. Waves can reach 15ft easily through the fetch effect from the heavy winds usually found in the area.

Nobody knows yet whatever happened to the Herc, considering that there might have been a massive failure.

It seems that some ships found some parts that belong to the Herc, floating some 30km south of last known position. Some personal items were recovered.

That was way sooner than I expected.

Where are you hearing there were personal items recovered? All that seems to be in the news is the tank foam.

Yup.

Funny thing is that, more often than not, I can be flying the southernmost basic instruction flight in the world :D

My wife and I flew into Punta Arenas on our honeymoon and did Torres del Paine for a week. Not sure I'll ever visit a place that beautiful again.

Would a military transport have an ELT and or FDRs?
Yes and no. However I can’t say how the Chileans outfit their aircraft.
Army aircraft have FDR’s and CVR’s, but no ELT’s. Each crew member has their own “ELT” if you will. In combat we also have other things that can get us located very quickly. However they need to be manual activated, unlike the G-force activated ELT.
