Swayne coming to a 121 near you

YOLO. Single and 23? A regional is a means to an end. He’s obvious picking up open time to build flight time (along with extra pay). Living in base would afford the maximum flexibility. Anyway, I assume Chicago is more happening than Fargo. Night scene, restaurants, girls/dating, stuff to do, etc.

I commuted to my regional. It sucked. Still better than living in De-toilet, though.

Admittedly, I moved to EWR to avoid commuting. But with how volatile the regionals tend to be, with base closures happening regularly, I'm not sure it's wise to move for a regional base.

Perhaps, but it's also probably much more expensive to live in Chicago than Fargo as well.

What business is it of yours where he chooses to live?

When I tell people live in base. I tell them to live in the base that’s either the most jr. Or to move into the historical “HQ” base for your airline.

I just don’t want to see another video of a mid 20s guy about “why he quit the airlines” because living in Florida and commuting out of Naples to Charlotte was tough for PSA and my god the days were so long because by the time I got to Charlotte I was tired. And then the trips needed too late I couldn’t get home that day...

To each his own. But it sounds like he picks up extra work to build more time (and money). Nothing beats that flexibility than living in base. Look at my story as a prime example. I lived in base and that allowed me to pick up and work so in 2008 I flew ~995 hrs, 2009 was ~998 and similar numbers for 2010 and 2011. That’s the only reason I was able to go to my major airline when I did in early 2012 when they’d dropped the mins to 4,000 total. Had I been commuting, no way would I fly 90-99 hrs per month. I would have done less as a commuter and miss out on getting hired elsewhere sooner.

Maybe not a big deal with all the retirements coming, but 2008-2011 was a weird time. Living in base then and flying the ass off paid dividends for down the road.

@Cherokee_Cruiser and yet here I am, who started fly for the regionals in 2012. Upgraded to captain on the same plane as you, before you and arguably making the same money as you. (Lots of variables, but safe assumption)

Your coming to age story isn’t the litmus test of success.

You’re ex-military and didn’t include that in your timeline.

I got a decent gig going, live in base on rsv and pick up on days off. April was 116 credit, May 104, June will be a light month at 90. I do fairly well. As for upgrading sooner, you know well enough it has to do with a seniority number and Spirit tripled in size since 2011. Anyway I didn’t take the first upgrade, prioritizing family and QOL over the left seat. But congrats on gettting that sooner I guess.

My story is far from a litmus test, as it is for anyone who started in this industry at a regional in 2007 and faced age 65 and a recession. I was just glad to have a flying job back in those days and not be furloughed in the street.

Then don't watch it if he makes one? Seems weird to care so much about a strangers living/ commuting situation. And honestly I still think that quitting video got blown way out of proportion- as far as I could tell that guy just thought the airlines weren't his cup of tea, but people took it as a personal insult that he left, some of them the same people who were mad at Swayne for actually being happy at the airlines when this thread first started.

People always take it personally on the internet if you say you don’t like xyz airline. Even if you make constructive critical comments.

If you want to see real fireworks say that you don’t like a specific pilot group [emoji51]

I like the guy, he seems smart, sharp, and level-headed. I think he’ll do well no matter where he goes.

What about the British Airways CA quitting video? His aha moment he said in the parking lot after a trip when he realized he was back where he started on day 1 and his net effect was 0. That’s one way to look at it, ignoring the fact you’re a couple thousand dollars richer.

:aghast::aghast:
I didn't see the BA quitting video...but that's got to be the dumbest reason to quit, especially seeing as most jobs you would end up in the same location you started the shift at. If the net effect is 0 one wonders what BA is paying him those thousands of pounds for.

Still though, probably just as well he quit. That's one more CA opening at British Airways that I'm sure just about every pilot in the UK would love to have a chance at.

Maybe he quit working at McDonalds as a kid for the exact same reason? And he thought to himself, “airline pilots travel all over! They’re never in the same spot!”... much to his chagrin.

I watched the video and completely understood where he was coming from. Some people are perfectly happy being another cog in the machine just moving metal from A to B over and over again for forty years. Others are bored to death and need to feel a sense of accomplishing something, solving new problems, etc. To each his own.

Plus whatever coin he "monetizes" from Youtube.

On a related note...When the whole internet censorship thing started 8-10 months ago, I thought everyone was hyperbolic because, well, censorship is bad, m'kay. But as it turns out it's all because someone's thumb is on the money scale. I really should have known better.

I didn't realize that an "internet video content provider" could actually provide a living.
