Hey, I'm an MEI!

Rosstafari

Hello, this is Orlando mayor Buddy Dyer
After a ten hour oral and 2.5 in the air, I survived my first instructor checkride. MEI at VGT. Hooray!

Thanks to everyone here for the help and distractions over the past year of flying and chasing down ratings. Looking forward to getting to work; I spent way too much time here anyway.

Congrats, MEI initial right?? Who were you flying with out of VGT? Westair?

Hey thanks. Yeah, initial. It was ATP... one of the last groups there before they shut down that location.

I liked the West Air people. Didn't talk to them a ton but they were good neighbors. Liked that airport a lot, good ATC. The practice area gets a little dodgy, which I'm sure you know if you've been there.

This is all your fault, you know. You think you're just gonna meet up for coffee in Phoenix, and BOOM, eight years later, some Chinese guy in the left seat is trying to turn you into a lawn dart turning base to final.

Guess I owe you another shirt.

Please tell me Sheble "Northtown" is no longer?

I remember ATP being next door but guess not as big a campus as AZ or CA...

Mine was from about 0730 to 1600 and then we took about a 90 minute flight for CFI and CFI-I.

Back in the day...I think my CFI was about a 2-3 hr oral and around a 1.5hr flight. My CFII was about the same and my MEI was about half of those. Guess there wasn’t as much info to digest when Orville and Wilbur were teaching.

On the flip side....My A300 type oral (with the FAA sitting in) back in 2000 was 5 hrs long!

I had a long 767 company oral, largely because I zipped through most of the required material and we ended up talking about wine.

My CFI oral was so long and it was already 4pm, I was like “What?! Now we have to fly? “ :)

My B727 FE sim ride was observed by the FAA. (Full disclosure: had to repeat a fuel x-feed procedure the next day due to me failing to notice a failed xfeed valve on the preflight which was probably due to frayed nerves by then).:(

My B75/76 Capt upgrade/Type (both oral and sim) was administered/observed by the FAA. My A300 type (oral and sim) was administered/observed by the FAA since it was a new fleet type for us and the checkairman were also being observed and given the blessing. All were administer under the old PC/PT format.

My MD11 type was a gentleman’s course under AQP format. Very laid back atmosphere ...almost enjoyable in comparison to previous type ratings. My first CQ on the aircraft, however, was observed by the FAA. Sensing a pattern here?!?

Yep, they're still there, though I think the ex-DPE guy who got into all the trouble there is no longer allowed to fly them, not sure. They had a Seminole crash on a nearby golf course last year, and while I was there, the state came and put a huge Stop Work order on their door for not paying taxes or wages or... something.

10 hrs oral?!? What did he have you do, verbally build the thing? Geez....

Haha. I have nobody to blame but myself. Great DPE, though in the scenarios he'd build, he'd touch on two or three subject areas at a time. I wasn't always sure which one he was emphasizing, and I figured I'd better make sure I hit everything in the PTS for each one, just to be safe... ...and I guess I made "extending the oral until you run out of daylight for the practical" a strategy?
