Ramp Workers

The Dennys didn't suprise me as much as the G-I, I found it hard to believe it was that much less expensive than a G-II, which were commonly offered for charter back then. Even before the Black Album they were selling out big venues without any FM radio exposure.

I was a line guy for about 12 years total, in New England. Hard work but the experience was invaluable. I hated when people would give line guys a hard time, but on the flip side nothing would piss me off more than seeing a line guy doing something stupid or being lazy.

To be honest, the majority of pilots when I was at Skywest were really laid back and respectful to the rampers. There were the bad eggs, but those were usually lifers who thought they were super important and felt the need to exude 707 Skygod swag at all times to compensate for their poor career choices, and those guys tended to clash with customer service, maintenance, and everyone else, too. I once heard one such captain scream "COUNT THE STRIPES, IT'S MY SHOW" to a very cool ramp supervisor. I never asked for the story behind the loud and animated altercation, but I can assume that man was the subject of much bid avoid.

Airline customer service was the most mentally demanding job I ever had, but the ramp was damn hard in it's own right. On hot days, it was a real challenge staying hydrated but still getting the flights out at a busy hub. And that was only a few shifts per year, I can't imagine desert heat and Northeast/Midwest Winters while still following policies and getting the flights out. My hat is off to them.

I would have said count my vertical stripes.

Hats off to those guys, spent 2 winters outside at ORD - 1 as a ramper.

Don't miss the days of being perched higher than the tail of CRJ-700 with the wind and fluid whipping in your face, in an open bucket and you're trying not to blow the APU by mistake. I was always envious of the AA rampers who had the enclosed cab de-icing trucks.

I did one winter on the ramp at MSP for AA and we had open buckets there, it was the best of times/it was the worst of times lol.. I wouldn’t want to don’t as a career but the year I did it was a lot of fun. Hard work sometimes, but fun. Kinda miss it sometimes. Would do it on the side if such a part time option with flexibility to accommodate my real job existed but even if it did, can’t because “conflict of interest”

I once ate James Hetfields untouched catered Dennys club sandwich plate. It was during the Black Album tour and they were chartering a G-I. Why they ordered Dennys for catering I have no idea. They actually hung out for a few minutes so they could stretch their legs a bit before they jumped in the cars and left. Seemed like nice people.
A bowl of vegetable beef and a Super Bird is a darn fine meal.

What's a Super Bird? For a soup sandwich combo I've always been partial to creamy tomatoe and a grilled cheese with some sort of meat. Or a good french dip with a bowl of good french onion soup.

Basically the Denny’s version of a turkey melt.

Yummy. Had I not just chowed down on some good Mexi with @Derg, it’d be on my list of potential eats.

Sourdough? Bacon? What makes it "Super"? There is a nice little spot near my house that makes a good tuna melt, but they're not open 24 hrs. I can't remember the last time I was awake after 2am, which is just fine, because nothing good happens after midnight anyway.

Edit to add: Now I'm craving clam chowder.

Dunno. It just is. Just like Arby’s is with the right ratio of Arby’s to Horsey sauce.
