Wasn’t meant as an affront on unions - apologies it was mistaken for that. Having never been union, I sometimes forget how sensitive a subject it is.

It's only sensitive because there has been an ongoing campaign to end union membership for decades now. Additionally, a reduction in union jobs has helped to lead to wage stagnation, and I'd argue that the election of the president was tipped because of all the people who have been left behind economically.

I was assuming, perhapes incorrectly, that your comment was about unions protecting their own and preventing companies from firing members, even when their conduct is egregious.

This is not what unions do at all, but like @jtrain609 said, our is most certainly the line of propaganda used by those attempting to destroy unions.
 
Steeping on my feet doesn’t warrant snatching someone up by the collar. I would be upset just because my boots would probably make be scuffed. I’d bet money that this guy had a history and this time he got bit in the a**. I can’t wait to hear the other sides of the story.
 
If this were the NYC subway the CA would have pulled a box cutter and slashed the agent’s face. Seems to be the go-to move nowadays.
 
Taken from the Company employee manual, which is available online. The CBA does not alter this language in any way. Behavior, subject to discipline, is listed by the company and the contract does not alter that fact. Violence is one issue that you can be terminated for. You have the protection of the contract for the termination process including placing your case, via your collective bargaining agent, before a neutral arbitrator. However the company will argue that you have violated published company policy that the union has agreed is an offense for which you can be terminated.

Keep it fair
No one wants to work for a company where harassment, intimidation or violence lives. To be absolutely clear, American prohibits threats and workplace violence toward our team members, vendors, customers or property. In no shape or form will the following be tolerated:
  • Physically or verbally threatening or intimidating another individual while at work, including acts of bullying;
  • The intentional destruction or threat of destruction of company or another’s property;
  • Harassing or threatening an team member while at work, including phone calls or written communications;
  • Stalking at work; and
  • Advocating illegal use of firearms, bombs, or weapons while at work.

This applies to everyone working on behalf of the company, including, but not limited to, American team members, contract workers, temporary workers, and non-employees on American’s property.If you witness or are aware of any violent or potentially violent conduct, do the right thing and report it to your local management as quickly as possible. They’ll take it from there, making an initial assessment of the situation and contacting the People Department.

#1 we had more than one instance of a ramper punching a pilot at ORD. The company strongly discouraged the pilot from pressing charges. Both kept their jobs.

#2 she "stepped" on his foot. This guy has had a 32 year career of controlling emotions in a highly stressful job. It is highly unlikely that he grabbed her neck for simply stepping on her foot. Youre only hearing one side of the story.

Even if authorities there find him guilty, Id still take his word over theirs. Specially after how authorities handled the mid air collision 10 years ago between the american pilots and brazilian plane.

Landing in Rio one morning, there was a new controller being trained and she was in the weeds. People were stepping on each other and it was a dumpster fire. We were finally vectored over the outer marker 3000 feet high with no clearance to join the LOc or cleared for the approach.

When we finally got a word in to the controller, she cleared us to land. We were over the airport at 3000 feet at this time. When we declined, she gave us a 90 degree turn and climb. On the clean up, we got a split flap, and declared an emergency.

Immediately, the senior controller got on frequency and refused to accept our emergency. Told us it was not allowed. Wanted to argue all the way around the pattern that it was our fault. Ended up having to file a complaint with the FAA and ICAO about the Brazilian controllers. It was a total mess.

The Brazilians probably put a warrant out for you arrest at that point because of your emergency and they didn't want to look bad.
