Operators with bases at KCM airports

And if you or your crew uses KCM, FOR THE LOVE OF GOD make sure they arrive at the checkpoint prepared to scan, show and move on quickly.

The seconds you spend digging through your man-bag, or your purse, then casually scanning your ID and the "pleasantries" like "Hows your mom? Oh we're flying to Akron!" adds up to minutes and adds delay. Kind of like rubbernecking on the freeway at an accident, you've just caused a 20 mile ongoing "ripple" on the freeway that can last for hours.

Have your crap out and ready to go. Period. I don't even care why you didn't, if you don't, step the hell aside.

My biggest pet peeve are ourselves.
Don’t you guys/gals show, like, an hour prior? How could minutes add up to a delay when you show an hour prior and don’t board for another 30 minutes?

(Not arguing be prepped for the scan. Especially when every crew bus in the city drops off at the same time. And it’s the 20th person in line sitting there like “oh! I have to scan?! My bad. Wait a minute while I get everything out”)

EDIT: Or were you just referencing delays getting through? I read it as delay through KCM meant delay the flight. Sorry if that was a reading comprehension fail.

You're getting old.

It’s a delay getting to that second cup of coffee. Fish or cut bait, but get the hell outta the way!

Few places? We must not fly the same places, because I'd say there's a bunch of place that make me take it out. "Sir, you're required to take it out everywhere..." Yeah, well, see, if I was, it wouldn't be in this holder.

You can thank the regional pilot that caused that rule to be foisted on everybody.

TSA - I work in management at TPA.

And word is they’re planning on rolling out temporary hours KCM at certain airsides. Not perfect, but it’s a start. Will target peak departure periods I believe. Dont have all of the details yet.
That will be amazing! I always figured the reason we don't have it at TPA is because we have 4 TSA checkpoints and they didn't want to spend the extra money from another person to sit around all day doing nothing.

I still don’t understand how KCM works or is even supposed to work.

I’ve been told something different each and ever time I’ve tried to utilize it. I’ve been told to go through the regular line, this airport doesn’t do that, and even you must be in uniform to use that (sorry, but this is my uniform, I don’t wear a tie and shoulder boards). So I’ve resigned myself to just going through the regular livestock lines. I get less eyeballing going through the general fodder checkpoints with my flightbag than trying to pull out that silly KCM.

If you can't figure out KCM, how on earth do you figure out your airplane?

I was at a big international airport and KCM seas located at the terminal exit point. I approached slowly and they guy waved me to approach. I said, “yeah it is located in the exit and I wasn’t sure if I could come in because the signs say do not enter. I didn’t wanna get arrested.” And he said, “we are just TSA. We have no power.” Lol

You must have missed the part where I stated I have received a different response every time I’ve presented it. I’ve read the frequent e-mails expounding the benefits and simple actions supposedly needed to use it and I never received the same response, let alone anything resembling what the KCM site states I should expect regarding interaction at checkpoints. Which if you want to directly relate the operation of my airframe would be like even after reading the POH and trying to fire up the APU and having the wheels fall off. Then the next time I do the same action the landing lights come on. But never in the amount of attempts does the APU ever come online.

So yea, I must be a real nitwit for not figuring out something that has no consistency; that I use maybe a handful of times a year, dealing with a government organization that is the butt of jokes dealing with our profession.

It’s nice to see there are a few sour nitwits even here. I was a bit worried this place was classier that airlinepilotcentral, but I think if we all try hard enough we can get snide enough with each other and really make great things happen here too.

Piss off.

That's basically it - with TSA resources distributed across four checkpoints, it's a uniquely difficult situation for staffing. It's a design that does give us the quickest actual TSA wait times in the country for large hub airports, though.

I don't get why so many crew members use their passport for the ID requirement. Isn't it easier, perhaps faster to just get the driver license out of the wallet?

Not all airports have it. Check the website, describes the locations and operating hours. Uniform not required. If your attire doesn't look like typical pilot attire you might get hassled as you approach the checkpoint so I'd suggest having a badge visible. You can use it for personal travel, domestic only.

Hope you give it another shot someday. It can save you aggravation at the regular checkpoint.

I had a bloke in sjc tell me I had to use kcm because I needed a boarding pass to go through the regular line.

I remember from back in the day having to get a gate pass or boarding pass from the ticket counter at certain stations even in uniform because they required it to go through the checkpoint if your airline didn't operate there. The worst was Newark. I flew out of the A-2 pod and once or twice had to get a gate pass to go through TSA at the A-1 pod to jumpseat home OAL because my airline didn't use any gates in that pod.

Not sure why this is an issue. Speed kills.

Go through at a normal pace. If in the morning be sure to get proper sustenance for your nutritional needs. Arrive at the aircraft and proceed to get ready at your normal pace. If late, be sure to note the delay was due to security.

It's only our problem if we make it our problem. Put it on someone else's spreadsheet, then it's their problem.

Don't get me wrong, TPA is the best large airport when it comes to security. I'm a pilot which means I am too cheap to pay for precheck and love to complain about having to deal with security. I love me some KCM so that I can save my money and my wife's wats as I drone on and on about how awful the TSA is. :)

Yea it’s a mystery to me too. Unless they have their passport ready in their pocket, which is rarely the case.
