New entrepreneurs ready to fix aviation safety

It never ceases to amaze me how many people misunderstand technology and then try to use buzzwords to seem smart and make themselves look stupider.

When I was working in IT for a Beltway bandit I was asked to review a proposal we were submitting. It was for a data entry project. The idiot sales droid who wrote the proposal kept using the term fat fingering for data entry. Not understanding the term. After my suggestions were shot down becuase marketing and sales thought they knew better I went to the CEO to plead with him that we remove the term fat fingers to describe how we do data entry. I was overruled, surprisingly we didn’t get the contract.

Now Blockchain is the new technology buzzword that everyone wants to change the database landscape. It’s like when you have a hammer everything looks like a nail. I’m sure some idiot at a major airline will take a chance on this debacle and it will end predictably.

The whole thing doesn’t make sense. If I read it right, whatever this is, it’s supposed to keep people from pencil whipping a logbook? And they think people are crashing airplanes because of falsified logbooks?

That’s the way I read it. There’s been what, maybe, 2 or 3 intentional fraudulent parts over the last 10 or 15 years? Last one I remember was the helicopter operator who got caught fudging the weight and balance and part of the investigation found non certified parts were used as well. That’s been pretty much it for a while.

How does Blockchain help that? Blockchain can only verify the data integrity for what is entered. It has no idea if the data entered is accurate or fraudulent.

This block chain logbook idea seems dumb.

That said, I can see the value of a third party data base for parts and having a virtual record of 8130s. That’d be worth a few cents per part. Or perhaps maintenance log entries stored in a database. Lost or destroyed maintenance logs probably destroys millions in value in the GA world per year.

Another thought: we in the US seem to be pretty honest about logging time. I can see folks from other cultures applying a more liberal pencil to show that crew members meet minimums. Maybe this is a real problem in the developing world -I just don’t know.

“Block chain” still seems too much of a buzz-word to me.

There were some news reports coming out of India IIRC showing it's a huge deal. Apparently after an airline hires someone over there they must train them - non firing allowed - and there was evidence of folks logging backseat time in lieu of actual training. One admitted he only had "about 45 minutes" of flight time before going to an airline.

I flew with a few Indian students back in 2008-2009. They had to have every page in their logbook stamped and signed by the flight school owner. Flight time in the states is highly sought after since there are fewer cases of "pencil whipping" although it still happens. One student was caught logging time in a C-152 that was down for engine overhaul. And then there were stories of a guy tying down an airplane and going to lunch while it idled in the spot!

I heard that a couple of Hillsboro students were caught doing this. They were found in the FBO watching TV while the planes were tied down outside with the engine running.

I never personally witnessed it but I wouldn't put it past some of those guys. Meanwhile myself and my friends were trying to beg, borrow, and steal our way to ATP mins.

Those voice-overs are creepy!!

Oh dear lord. That's the Russian equivalent of "I am Prince Ng'doko of the Lost Tribe of the Merovingians and $100 billion USD was made inaccessible, but only you can help… yes you, in Iowa"
Why you got to bring Russia into this??? They're innocent as a newborn baby, I tells ya.

Dude, you've gotta go to their website. It's slick, but scroll down and look at the pics of the people...ah, glorious Russia. Hahahahahaha.

So, yeah, I started with the video, and then went to the website after commenting. Apparently, you did the correct way. Still hilarious. I love the brand ambassador waving in his pic...
