Beginning in Alaska

It's a door knocking culture? I imagine those doors are spread out all over; that's alot of geography to cover. Any suggestions as to where to start?
Currently in ground school right now with a 135 carrier up here in AK. Got the job by simply showing up with resumes in-hand, and walking into headquarter buildings asking to say hello to a chief pilot - was offered a class date, on the spot, at my second stop. (I'd applied online previously with no bites to the same carriers)

I've also got about 1/4 as many hours as everyone else in the class, if that says anything about how much knocking on doors helped me.

Where are you at? I get home in a few days, I'm always open to buying a new AK pilot a beer.

I got picked up by Grant. And, while normally I'd jump at the chance for a free beer, I'm wrapping up a month of no alcohol - one of those times where you have so much rum in Cuba that you swear off drinking for a bit

Let me know if you end up in DLG.

Will do! The most current plan looks like I'll be flying the Airvan out of Bethel, for now, but I've already seen how easily the plans can change, so I won't be sure until the dust all settles.

Are you commuting from the states?

True, but you have to live in Nome, which isn’t for everyone.
Nome is freakin’ awesome! Probably my favorite place in Alaska. Here’s a few of the reasons in no particular order: fresh king crab is cheap, great people, awesome scenery, go-arounds due to musk oxen on the runway, incredible spring wildflowers, ample free moose meat and salmon from good folks, two supermarkets, a good gym, THE IDITAROD FINISH, 300 miles of road or trail to explore by four wheeler or motorcycle, good approaches to most villages, the occasional opportunity to pop up to OTZ or down to UNK, salmon fishing in the Snake River right at the airport, flying to Wales on a clear day, landing on the short runway at Brevig Mission when the wind is howling, the village agent/VPSO/man of many talents Dan at White Mountain, the ridiculous RNAV 19 at Elim (don’t do it!). Nome is the most normal feeling bush village I’ve encountered; there’s a lot of good things to be said about it.

I’ve only been there a handful of times, and it was pretty cool. Got to see Jeff King cross the finish line in 06.

Are you commuting from the states?
Yep. Working the 1st-15th of every month, coming in from MKE. Grant provides positive space tickets (after you get yourself here for initial training), which other pilots here have told me is favorable to commuting on standby.
