King of the skies?

I was indeed at LN during the F-111F era. Indeed, I was there for the transition from the F-4D to the F-111F. Fine aircraft by that time (1977), but it sure was a piece of junk before they got the bugs worked out of it. The F-111 dropped more ordinance during Desert Storm than all other aircraft combined, if I recall correctly, and the LN F-111F was used to bomb Libya in 1986.

The details of the '86 mission are indeed interesting in terms of the exceptionally long route the LN F-models and UH EF's had to take around Spain, all because France wouldn't allow overflight. Apparently, one of the reasons the F-117 came out of the black world a couple years later was due to the fact that they would've been good for the mission, but none of the planning staffs and commanders knew it existed.

Beautiful. Not masculine enough.

One of the Capt's here at QX took part in Operation Ghost Rider (the mock raid). He love the F-111...800kts, solid IMC at 200ft and the airplane was rock steady.
