I shoot with and advanced camera, and much of the time I shoot in portrait orientation for artistic effect.

Photos and video shot in landscape are commonly mistakenly displayed in portrait orientation when uploaded to social media or displayed by some viewers.

Orientation is described in EXIF data. EXIF data is commonly removed for privacy reasons. Consequently, photos and videos are often incorrectly displayed if they rely on the orientation tag. The orientation tag can also be incorrect if the camera sensor is wonky.

So, if you want to be 100% sure that your video is viewed in the correct orientation, shoot in portrait orientation. I don't need to be 100% sure, I'll play with the odds and shoot video in landscape if the subject calls for it.

I suspect so, but now you are going to make me research it.

Edit: Yes, bad or missing EXIF data (or a wonky camera sensor) is the cause of that too. My quick research corrected a misunderstanding I had about EXIF orientation. The tag doesn't just say, landscape or portrait. It describes EIGHT possible orientations. Pretty cool.

Not a phone. that shot was taken with a now retired Panasonic ZS6. My primary travel camera is currently a Panasonic FZ1000. I also use on occasion a Canon G1 X and a Canon EOS 5D.
