Commercial Multi Training

Anyone have a recommendation for a quality place to get my CMEL? I'm thinking I want to do the Mutli as the initial.

I'm in Austin TX and only know of one place that still has a multi.

Searched the forums but really only found people looking for the cheap route. I would be willing to pay a premium for a good instructor/sound maintenance and while staying in Texas would be nice I'm open to a "fast track" or consecutive day program anywhere in US. Thanks!

Have you looked into American Flyers up north in Addison? They have some good training and pretty accelerated based on how much time you put into it. Is it just the add-on you need, because you could get it done in a week. They even have really good deals on extended stays.

I've heard good things about Pray Aviation near Wichita, KS. I know they get a fair amount of folks from TX to complete their ratings.

I haven't but will do that. Had only heard about their CFI program at ADS. I was looking to do the CMEL as the initial, but for no particular reason. Thanks for the input!

I'd just look into the price. I did their CFI program so I was out there in ADS for about month and a half. Really liked that flight school and the students were generally happy. Depending on how much flight time you need though, their prices run on the high side. Might draw you away. I only rented their a/c for about 10 hours so it was fine for me, but I didn't touch their multi. Heard good things about it though, I think it's a Cessna 310.

http://www.tempusflight.com/index.php I believe they have a Seminole and I believe they're based out of San Marcos. https://www.texasaviationacademy.com/aircraft is down in New Braunfels and they have a Seminole as well.

http://www.genesisflightacademy.com/planesrates-georgetown.php Have a Piper Seneca. http://www.pilotschoice.com/Services/Rentals.aspx Are also in Georgetown and have a Duchess which in my opinion was much nicer to fly as I hated the layout in the Seminole (which I only flew once and it was a turbo model, still my least favorite twin).

They don't exist anymore. Few and far between. The only way for a school to make money on these planes is volume. Twins are low volume and twice the cost and twice the mx. The only reason to keep them around is if you are an academy and need it to promise students CMEL certs. On top of all that, who would get their MEI when no ones even training in them. We only have one at SNA from all of the 5 schools and it NEVER even flies. That says a lot. I do hear 2126X flying a lot in LGB. I got my CMEL in it in 2001.

I actually delivered their Diamond Twin Star 989JA iirc. Nice folks, my issue is with how busy ADS is, every demo flight I did we waited at least 10-15 minutes for landing traffic / etc.

Check out Action Multi in GON. For the price it's worth the travel. This was a few years ago and I drove but everything including my expenses was right at $3,000. Excellent training and they send you study materials before hand.

Pilot's Choice in Georgetown.
They stiffed me on my checkout...

If you could find a plane I'd be more than happy to give you instruction, but it'd be hard/expensive to do that. Most schools will charge an arm and a leg too, and they jack up the price of the instruction for commercial training. If you have your PMEL and you already meet the 61.129(b)(4) requirements you could get your CMEL in 20 hours minus the instruction for your private. If it's your first multi rating then you're looking at around 32 to 40 hours. ATP in Georgetown, or anywhere really, used to offer a multi only course but I don't think we do any more. You could try calling, though. That brings up the whole ATP debate again which this board has hashed out about 500 times already.

...I was looking to do the CMEL as the initial, but for no particular reason....

Have you actually crunched how much that is going to cost you compared to doing CSEL as your initial? It's staggering. The vast majority of the dual I give is multi time, and I'm still utterly shocked every time I close out a flight. And we're a cheaper option! There may be some formula that makes it a value if you plan on buying a twin, and your insurance company requires an amount of dual multi before you can fly it, but 'no particular reason' for spending an extra $170 per dual flight hour is a tough proposition.

Check out Anson Aviation in Sugar Land, TX (basically Houston). They have a Seminole available for rent and a brand new hangar and maintenance facility. Trained and rented from them for years and never had any issues with their equipment (and great instructors). They're at KSGR - very short time taxi-time and the airport is never too busy. Never flew their Seminole specifically, but it didn't seem to be in the air much so availability is probably good.

Try ATD Flight Systems at KC Downtown. They'll get you through fast and well taught. http://atdflightsystems.com/. It's not Texas, but it's not far from Texas.

Don't get me wrong, Diamonds are fine planes. I love 'em. Problem is they're not really complex multi-engine pistons. If you learned to fly a a "multi-piston" in a DA42 or DA62 and then had to transition to a, say, Navajo? Good luck.

This particular one is a DA42-L360. All 6 levers we've come to know and love. IO-360, 100LL burning gas hog.

Ignore the disney chameleon (I have an album of his adventures for my daughter when I fly).

Unless it is a family name, there is something about Pray Aviation that discourages me. Do you pray their instructors and maintenance is good? Or pray that this WSCOD makes it back to the airport in one piece.. see where I'm going.

I love the Disney Character idea!
I have kind of a similar deal with a few pilot buddies who love Diamond Almonds. We send each other Diamond selfies from around the world.
