The truth about being a pilot

I am just amazed that people think my career is so awesome. It has gotten to the point where I want to tell them how much it sucks lol. I don't want to sound negative but sometimes I just feel that way. There are definitely a lot of negatives with this career, just like any other career.

What would everyone say are the worst parts of this career?

I would honestly say that the tests every six months, and the time away from home are some of the biggest negatives.
 
Romantic adventure novels and personal experience suggest that the darkest hours come immediately before dawn.
 
Kinda sad that so many aspiring pilots think that 'being a pilot' means flying a shiny jet for an airline (not that there's anything wrong with that).

Nothing wrong with that. I know I can't deal with the same (mostly the same) schedule everyday. Some people like that. Some people don't.
 
I enjoy what I do. It beats sitting in an office somewhere, and it's nice to get more days off than the average person. Not to mention getting away from this Phoenix heat when i go to work. The worse part is dealing with some of the bitter guys for 4 or 5 days straight, but that's nothing PBS can't fix. I think some people have forgotten how to enjoy flying, so the job just sucks IMO.
 
If that's the case then you have to ask yourself "what am I doing to better my current situation?"

My career hasn't gone entirely to plan, nor has it been enjoyable all of the time. That said, I have very few regrets and feel that the sacrifices and hard work that I made have paid off and I'm really doing the kind of flying that I always dreamed of doing.

For the most part, the positives and negatives of this career have met what I expected them to be. It is no secret that you spend a lot of time on the road, sleep schedules get messed up, and nothing is ever for certain. If any of these came as a surprise to you...well...

Being on Jetcareers and making lifelong friends has helped pave my way forward and put me in touch with a lot of people who have gone before me that could paint an accurate picture.

There are definitely things that are hard in this industry, but in today's market if you're not happy you're either doing it wrong or this isn't the job for you.

If I am incorrect, disregard and I'll apologize, but IIRC didn't you post not too long ago asking for studying materials for a Caravan or 99 or similar? Saying it was your first turbine... If it already sucks, I don't know what to say.

Nope that's him. Everyone wants to go from PPL -> G550/777. If you can't hack the suck go be a bank teller.
