Eff you SWA

Go to flightaware and check out routes between major city pairs- they're essentially straight lines. You're not saving much money by going direct.

I'm sure over the course of a year, if they manage to bring down their fuel burns .5% because of better routings it turns into tens of millions of dollars.

Then you get on the ground and wait for a gate.

But it's "greener," the airlines are just trying to save the planet [emoji6]

You want a better route than a straight line on a domestic flight?

For several years, EWR had a cap on the amount of flights allowed per hour. Back in November I think it was this cap was removed. UAL and others immediately added more flights. Now they complain that we hold too much. The problem isn't technology, it's a lack of airspace. Even with GPS/ADS-B tracking as opposed to radar, would you feel comfortable being 1 mile from someone instead of 3? And GPS won't do anything about wake turbulence.

SWA is sending this crap out with all their emails. They have essentially laid all airline delays at the hands of ATC. SWA pilots, it's not personal, but no more shortcuts for you.

I get what you're saying with this. And I understand why. And I generally agree!

But you're in a radar room because of SWA and the other airlines. Not the other way around.

When we think about how many out of SWA's 54,000 employees are actually involved with the creation of this online ATC modernization campaign, we would realize it's about 20-30 people somewhere in management, probably not quite at the top but they got approval from the top.

So, your beef with this is directed at .05% of the employees, to say nothing of the fact that 97% of the people on any given jet are the passengers and they are literally and metaphorically just along for the ride.

So if it's "SWA pilots...no more shortcuts for you," it's not logical and therefore it is personal. The title of the thread, in the professionalism category, is analogous to the PHL TRACON controller who had the stuck mic and called the UPS pilots "f'ing idiots" when they were correct and she was wrong.

If you want someone to take it out on, use Norwegian or the ME3. SWA is breaking no rules by creating a website with their opinions on it, as much as those of us in the aviation community may disagree with them (including myself).

Hey - thanks for the helping hand as I wander in apparent ignorance like I missed some social que about why such a question leads you to believe that is ignorance. I guess you cannot divulge your trade secrets. At least rebut so anyone can see how you might even be right or wrong.

There has been multiple threads about the this issue.

Ill rephrase. Is part of the fear of privatization that a cushy gig gets disrupted?

If by cushy gig you mean currently working 50-60 hours a week every week, no spot leave (spot leave means I say "hey I'm going to take vacation next month" as opposed to submitting our vacation days a year in advance), working 6am-2pm and then back again for 11pm-7am to cover the midshift, and having to work 17 positions with 7 people.

But yes, part of the fear of privatization is what will happen to pay and benefits.

Once we get that sweet NextGen installed and everybody is flying GPS Direct everywhere delays will be a thing of the past.

Oh wait, that's not how any of this works. These people act like Radar tracking is the only reason they're not just flying a straight line LAX-MIA at Mach .85 the entire way. There's not enough runways, and airlines schedule more flights into hub airports at the same time than can realistically be accommodated without some kind of delay.

People love to complain. Is the ATC system perfect? No. There are things that can be improved and be made more efficient for sure. Is giving the countries NAS away to a congressman's airline lobbyist girlfriend to be privatized the answer? I highly doubt it.
Personally it feels like all this push for "modernization" is just a very sly attempt to take away the pay and retirement benefits of a highly paid federal workforce.

You put it better than I did, I think.

Literally just curious, and not trying to pick a fight. How specifically is the ATC system a complete joke?

Perfect example. Trying to leave PHL to go to MSP last week and there's a few small cells out over PTW. That departure corridor gets closed so we go wait. Ask clearance if we can go over MXE or anywhere else. No can't do that. So we wait and they clear us out over MXE 45 or so minutes later. We take off and once on with center get cleared back on our original route over PTW immediately.

I obviously don't see the big picture but stuff like that is so frustrating.

Also, I recently talked about having to declare an emergency to avoid a giant cell bc the approach controller wouldn't let turn us turn. I'm not a controller but that stuff enrages me.

Like someone else said the controllers have a job because of the airlines. Sometimes that fact is forgotten. Its the same with pilots and pax. Some of them can be a pain but without them we wouldn't have a job without them.

Don't get me wrong I appreciate all the work controllers do and I do not want to see you guys lose any money/ benefits. I'm just calling a spade and spade.

Sorry - you're going to have to answer for yourself instead of differing to other threads.

I really want to hear your expertise on the matter now that I've been labeled "ignorant" for asking a question.

It's not modernization that is the fear. It is privatization that is the fear. Privatization and modernization are not synonymous.
I'd prefer the unknowns of a privatized, modernized system over what we have in our federal, antiquated system.
