Is it too late to change names? — United allegedly flew an unsafe plane 23 times

Article won't load for some reason but my first response was... "Only 23?"

https://www.faa.gov/news/press_releases/news_story.cfm?newsId=11777

"The FAA subsequently determined that 286 of the airline’s MD-80s were operated on a combined 14,278 passenger flights while the aircraft were not in compliance with Federal Regulations. American ultimately completed the work required by the 2006 Airworthiness Directive."

That was a BS fine instead of zip tying at something like 2.5" AA did it at 3" or something stupid. OK, yeah, technically it didn't comply but wasn't really a safety of flight issue. That was just the FAA being the FAA.

Is it bad that "only 23" was the first thing I thought of as well? Sheesh. 23? Tis but a flesh wound.

You could look at it as a 100ft. run of wire is missing 80 cable ties.

Maintenance is no place for the lazy.

All United has to do is have an FA accidentally dump a drink on a passenger's laptop and ensure it is caught on video and this story will go away.

...The media only reports the news in a completely unbiased way....

On a few occasions (and sources), maybe, but truth is still an absolute defense.

As a country, we've lost the ability to differentiate between "bias" (in story selection, in fact selection and in narrative emphasis) and "sensationalism" (same three criteria). It has been growing, but the 2016 election and the current administration has thrown so much mud around this issue....

Truth is not something that is said, that I agree with, it is something supported by facts (and no one is entitled to their 'own facts'!). No disparagement intended to Mike, who has brought tremendous factual accuracy and understanding on his specialties on this board. But he pushed my button by repeating a party-line piece of cant that is a part of what's poisoning society these days.

Please spray foam on it and cool it below the flash point!

The media in general has created their own perception of themselves and the quality of their reporting in many instances, whether through bias or lack of fact or sensationalism, as you rightfully cite. But truth has also been a victim of accuracy lately with the media in general. Separating opinion pieces from what is actual news, news should indeed be based on and supported by fact. Yet a number of news outlets have run stories without doing actual fact checking, and later even if proven to be inaccurate at best or fake at worst, have failed to retract or post a small retraction or correction somewhere that isn't seen. Is this all media? Of course not. But enough news media of all types have been caught up in this that Reagan's motto of "trust, but verify", has to be taken into account by the public, as anything from the media cannot anymore really be taken at face value unless one knows the facts to be what they are. When notable news reporters like Dan Rather defended his story on Bush's Air National Guard service with documents that failed to be verified, and were then passed as "fake, but accurate", it's no wonder that mottos like ".. trusted name in news" and similar types, started to fall flat. and again, that goes for any news media....or purported news media, and obviously not opinion pieces or shows.....which aren't classical news anyway. Same with false narratives or news later passed on about Obama on a few different subjects that were either false or not accurate.

It behooves the consumer of news media to actually do some homework on their end these days, and not just trust what is being fed to them by anyone or any outlet. Exercising a little bit of due diligence is necessary.

And too, I was merely addressing the presumption that United Airlines has some sort of target on them by the media. :)

Yes. and I'm not sure enough people (a.) realize this, or (b.) are being taught that it is necessary, and (c.) know how to do it. We've gone from having many newspapers, each with its own political stripe. H.L. Mencken said: "Never trust a man who buys ink by the barrel and newsprint by the ton." Then, consolidation in the 1950's thru the present, brought the idea of a fair and balanced press forward. It hit stride with the Pentagon Papers and Watergate. History is now proving that it is cyclical, as a raft of voices on-line and on-the-air contribute real news, considered opinion, fake news, and blather, much looking alike to an observer. Even intelligent people can find it hard to know what to believe, and whom.

And too, I was merely addressing the presumption that United Airlines has some sort of target on them by the media. :)

Ah, the pig-pile effect. We learned it on the elementary school playground, and some people never graduated. Lots of reasons contribute to this in journalism, many not at all salubrious. Too bad that 'restraint' is an obsolete concept for some.

Mike, if you told me that it's safe to run into that burning aircraft, I'd hitch up my Nomex tighty-whities and follow you. Certainly not true of everyone I know, read, or watch!

H.L. Mencken said: "Never trust a man who buys ink by the barrel and newsprint by the ton."

Unless this is another quote with which I'm unfamiliar, the actual quote was, "Never pick a fight with people who buy ink by the barrel," and the origin of the quote was Mark Twain (Samuel Clemens).

"Airlines have the 'highest' duty of care"... get it? :)
The media having an agenda? Cmon now, that's crazy talk, we all know that never happens and doesn't exist. :)

The media only reports the news in a completely unbiased way....

Would you please enlighten me as to how what was stated in this article is biased? Is it the simple fact that this information was reported that somehow imbues it with bias? If that's it, then yes, you are correct: the media certainly does have a bias to report information. Is it that you think this is bad news about our industry, and you just don't like bad news about our industry disseminated? Or is it something else? Please parse this article for me and indicate all the sentences which you believe to be biased and why you believe them to be.

As I see it, this article was anodyne. CNN Financial reported on an action proposed by the FAA, an action that could be material to investors. CNN reported facts about what the FAA found, what the FAA said, and what the FAA proposed. CNN reported United's response to the situation. CNN then reiterated some of the other recent events that have affected the public's perception of United, and therefore could have an effect on the company's financials and/or on investor sentiment.

If you want to get upset at the FAA, fine. Get upset with the FAA. But why make a generalized dig at the media because of a monochrome report about FAA actions? What is it you are seeing here? Or do you, perhaps, hold some bias about the media you have not fully examined?

"Most people quoted on the Internet never uttered the words attributed to them." -Thomas Jefferson

"Which is an especially pithy quote coming in a thread in which we have been admonished to do our homework and check our sources." -Theodore Roosevelt

You completely missed the sarcastic nature of my comment, and the comment I was replying to. :)

So are you saying that this...
This is stupid. The FAA fines all the airlines fairly regularly for this if you look into it. United really has a target on them by the media.

and your reply to it...

... were said ironically? You're saying that @Dan208B meant that the reporting was not "stupid", and the media were correct to report this incident because this kind of thing really does not happen all the time?? And that you were just confirming his ironic observation?

Also, if you're going to quote me, please quote me correctly... It's unbecoming of you to call out professional journalists as lying, biased hacks and then make up fake words I supposedly said, especially after your exalted admonitions for us all to be careful, do our homework and check the facts. But it was hysterical coming just after the post that preceded it.
