While I was typing this out and thinking of things I could lose I guess the easiest option that occurred to me was a small personal bag for anything valuable. Luckily I've never been out of overhead space and with the newer plane designs soon to be introduced or becoming more widely spread I wonder if it'll be something I ever have to worry about. I'm anxious to fly the MRJ and C-Series. I've flown on some of the newer 737s with the space bins and was very impressed.
 
Will we get to the point where everyone pays for zone 1 and we run out of overhead baggage space...

Right now it's easy to say, "well, you're zone 4 so you have to expect no overhead space left over!"*

*not mentioned when you purchase the ticket

Like seriously, there are realities of air travel and two of those things are limited overhead space and rampers that throw luggage around. You can rage against the system and take a few years off your heart due to blood pressure, or you could be an adult and pack your appropriately.

There's actually MORE overhead space than there was a decade ago, but people try to move an entire household to grandma's for the weekend.

I don't mind gate checking bags on own metal if I have to. Especially if I get a seat toward the front of the main cabin because some neckbeard has usually put his crap over my seat and he's seated way in the back.
 
I just got back from vacay...had to gate check bags every time and the operation actually made me walk around and load my own bags in the cargo area.

The good news was that the onboard food was passable and I didn't have to wait very long for the cabin service...

I think AA already ran into that problem by giving anyone with a pulse Zone 1 or earlier boarding privileges. People with children, handicap people, elites, members of the military, full fare tickets, first class, concierge key, AA credit card holders, people that bought MCE, people that stayed at a Holiday Inn Express last night, and probably another dozen classifications I’m forgetting. They ended up having to redesignate their zones because of this.

Exactly. It's a lot better than dealing with the animals in baggage claim.

On UAL kids stuff is going to wait for you on the jetway - stroller/carseat. Gate checked bag - go fetch it on the baggage claim carousel.
I helped with a proposal to notify zone 4-5 pax of the high probability of having to check the bag at the gate and offering complementary check-in before dragging it through TSA and all over the airport. Pax win in convenience, airline wins in delay times (projected $$$ savings were yuuuge even by airline standards). Result - "Basic Economy is rolling out and gonna fix it all".

Not as expensive as you would think. I've done it several times and it's great! Just give the hotel/residence a heads up it might show up a few hours before you.

The last flight I was on seemed like 3/4 boarded when zone 1 was called.

What type of shipping insurance do you normally pick up on the whips, chains, ball gag, leashes and leather gimp?

Also regarding gate checked bags for bags that won't fit in the overhead storage, do pax or gate agents no longer use the little bin at the gate that says "if your bag doesn't fit in here, you will need to check it, because it won't fit in an overhead bin" or something similar to that? Do those bins not exist anymore?

Bags that fit in those bins still wont fit in the CRJ overheads, especially if they're stuffed to bursting by Mr. "Nuh uh I aint paying to check a bag"
