Which is cool if you're into that. Me I'd be perfectly happy if I never had to deal with amphibs in salt water again.

True, it could certainly be easier in fresh water, however the destination environment here is salt water so that is the way it is. Fresh water is pretty slim down this way. I'd be really surprised to hear if anyone ever flew a seaplane into Lake Okeechobee as a for hire operation.

When landing in freshwater means an alligator hazard, my guess is the appeal is reduced significantly

Oh, I know all about necessity...6 floatplanes serving 4 saltwater destinations with no hope of a runway. Doesn't mean I enjoy it.
 
My local airport has been known to have many alligators on it. Usually in the pods around the airport, but sometimes on the airport surface. Somewhere I have video of a gator crossing the taxiway in front of me in the Cub, and another photo of a 4' gator at the tie down rope of a C172.
