NooB logging question

You have to remember, being a PIC qualified First Officer for domestic operations is only something that has happened in the past few years. Prior to the 1500 hour/ATP ruled, all you needed was a commercial certificate to legally operate a transport category jet as a First Officer in Part 121 operations.

Thus logging Part 61.51 PIC was a moot point as the only thing you could log was SIC.

We have something like this (135 ops) because the SIC has the same training/checking as a PIC (135.293/297), but they don't have a line check (299).

Is this done in 121 to expedite upgrades (move over to the left seat and you're done) or are there tasks that must be completed?

Under 121 now the pic and sic have the same full type rating. However under AQP only the captain is required to get a yearly line check. Both PIC/SIC get annually check rides. At Non AQP places the captain must take checkride every six months. The FO is yearly.

Also their is nothing in the SIC's training record that would show he/she is qualified to operate as captain.

Lastly the SIC and PIC names are specially spelled out on the release. The FOM clearly defines the duties and responsibilities of each seat.

People will log it however they want to log it. But log it wrong don't be shocked if it gets questioned or potentially blows a job interview.

A colleague taught me that context matters in the FARs. You have to consider the entire FAR, not just the individual bullet points. Part 61 deals with certification of pilots and flight instructors; therefore the time logging requirements deal specifically with that context. It's a mechanism that allows pilots to log PIC time while working towards a certificate or rating. I don't know what the FAA says, but it seems to me that it wasn't meant for two private pilots taking turns flying a Cherokee.

Oddly, in our FOM, the captain and Fo duties are identical, with the exception of the captain being responsible for enforcing the company uniform policy on the entire crew.
